Publisher's Summary

I thought I was ordinary Rory Franco: college student, artist, and over-protected daughter. Then, mages barge into my family’s home, murder my parents, and whisk me off to a university known as Villain Academy.

It turns out I’m Persephone Bloodstone, the long lost heir to one of the five royal families of dark magic. I’m destined to learn how to manipulate the world with fear - and to stand beside the four other scions: the scorching-hot, arrogant young men who rule this school.

The four of them crush anyone who doesn’t kowtow. No way in hell will I bow to any villain, no matter how brutally alluring. They can turn on the charm or tear me down, but they can’t break me.

They’ve never met anyone like me before. I don’t care about ruling. I just want to avenge the people I loved.

It doesn’t matter what kind of magic runs through my veins. I’m taking Villain Academy down.

Cruel Magic is the first in a university-age paranormal academy series. Expect magical villainy, a tough heroine who bends to no one’s will, a dollop of steam, and a slow-burn reverse harem romance where there'll be no choosing required.

I wanted to like this....

I was really hoping for more redeeming qualities in the male characters, but sadly this is a book about 4 boys slowing breaking a girl and it can be hard to listen to at times.

I'm not sure if...

I like it. There are joy-mancers and fear-mancers and well the fear-mancers get their power from fear, the parents are evil and their children are on the best way. I don't like the way they are! And they were taught to do so... The narration was great! But when the voice from the female narrator gets louder, their is a distortion. It doesn't get louder in the speakers so that's a plus. But there's a slight crackling sound, like she is to near to the microphone.

Thumbs up!

This was a really good start to the series. There’s so much potential to see where this series will go. Chase does a great job with Rory’s character development. She starts off a bit meek but really starts building up her self confidence by the end of the book. She knows what she needs to do to survive but doesn’t waiver from her morals. I do hope in book 2 she really lays it into the other Scions and gains that respect from them. There wasn’t much redeeming characteristic right now in book 1 for me to root for the other Scions as a romantic interest. I know this is a bully romance, enemy to lover type novel. Right now the Scions are just jerks. It isn’t much of a RH right now. But it does lay the ground works for potential in the next book. This is a slow burn series. That being said this is a very well written novel. There’s a lot of drama but also an over arching sub plot that goes a bit deeper. I want to continue reading this series to find out what it is. Also the narration is done very well by Meg Sylvan and Stephen Dexter. I really enjoyed listening to them. Overall, I really enjoyed this book :)

This is like a reverse Harry Potter story.

This is such a wonderful read/listen! First off this is my first book by this author. I am impressed. The world building in this fantasy story is great! I loved the whole idea of the magic being pulled from fear and joy. The characters were relatable and I enjoyed watching them change/grow. Being a long lost mage and thrust into this world would throw anyone off their axis. Rory does a good job trying to keep her values and not go to the “dark side”. She makes a few friends but mostly plays catch up trying to learn magic. She does make a couple enemies and “mean girls”. Then the pranking starts. Smelly rooms, hot seats in class..etc. I did enjoy reading the boys sides when their chapters came up. It shows a little look into their lives. I did listen to this on audio. Meg Sylvan did most of the reading as Rory. She did a wonderful job being all the other characters as well. Stephen Dexter did the boys voices when we hear from them. He did a good job as well portraying each of their voices differently. This was my first listening to both of them. Although Meg Sylvan’a voice did sound familiar This is like a reverse Harry Potter. Mages using fear instead of power within. Very enjoyable!

I struggled with the abusive behaviors

I empathized with main character and felt such anger at the treatment she received- I kept hoping that she would flip it around on the abusers... however she appeared to has this weird attraction to these horrible people. I couldn’t finish it. It just kept up the misery too long. Sexual elements were weird too

neverending and monotonous bullying

honestly i like a good angsty sruggle or torture for a protagonist to overcome but the last 4 hours of the book was just hopeless nevetending bullying with no light at the end of the tunnel. no humor in the face of struggle or hope. honestly i was just sitting around waiting for the protagonist to try and kill her self. wont be continuing this series.

Intense

I really liked this audiobook and didn't want any interruptions. I love the trope enemies to lovers and I can see it's possible (so far it's a slow burn with some sexual tension and a hot steamy scene) but can tell it's going to take some time. Book 1 really put the heroine through the ringer. She faced a lot of things that would break another but her strength, determination and moral character really shined through. Everything is quite intriguing about this world and the academy. I can't wait to find out more! The duet narration really helps enhance the story. And can I just say how sexy Stephen Dexter's voice is?! Yum, I am totally impatient to start book 2!!

loved the concept of the story, great to listen to

intriguing concept to follow this group born into the evil side of their society. loved it and looking forward to finding out more as the groups lives entwine. Megan Sylvan is an excellent narrator throughout this book but Stephen Dexter took a bit of time getting the boys. Good idea though as you really feel it's a boys point of view. update after reading whole series. It's worth it, a rollercoaster of a story over 8 books.

Exciting RH, now I see what I was missing out on.

My first toe dip into the magnificent mind of Eva Chase and she has me hook line and sinker. I loved this book more than I thought I would, and cannot wait to read the rest of the series. The storyline is different to what I'm used to, but in a brilliant way and I have never read RH before, and now I know I was missing out big time. The narrators were fantastic and really brought the characters to life. Looking forward to bingeing all of this authors books!!!!

Fun story with excellent narration

Interesting concept for a series, and paranormal romance fans will be sure to love the drama and intrigue, even if that part wasn't my cup of tea. Has some really great character work and the magical system was really clever, plus the little sidekick was so cute!

A really good story

Rory never dreamt what would happen to her. In a day she saw her life completely smashed and goes to a villain school. This is a great start to the book, it's a different setting from most of my usual readings, and I definitely liked it. This is an introductory book, we get to know Rory and the four scions, as well as Blood U. Sometimes it gets a bit slow, but most of the time it goes really well. I'm really curious to see what's going to happen to Rory next. Regarding the audiobook, I really enjoyed the performance of the actors, clear voices, with great feeling :D I received a free audio copy from the author for an honest review :)

Slow burn enemies to lovers

I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review. I found this a pretty intense academy book that hooked me from the start. It has guys that literally you want to throttle at times but with chunks of their pov’s that make you think twice to just why they are the way they are. It’s certainly going to be a slow burn here but from enemies to lovers deal but each has their own story to tell. With such a strong, fierce but relatable female lead Rory it makes this book easy to find enjoyable but equally I can see why some would hate that she’s so bullied by the love interests. This actually slightly reminds me of young guys who pull the girls pigtails of the girl they like sooo I rather liked it and found it just proved her strength. I’ve really enjoyed the time it’s taken to weave this world and I’m sure that only more will be introduced as time goes on. The plot is very intriguing with certain questions about what the future holds and I’m certainly ready to keep reading.

Would Glenda the Good Witch fair well at Blood U?

I just finished listening to Royals of Villain Academy book 1 by Eva Chase. I recommend it to whoever is curious or likes: -Academy, -Magic, -A fierce heroine who does not bow down to bullies no matter how powerful and delishly hot they are, -And of course scorching hot male characters who you wish you could have all right now even though you should be busy hating them. Yes, this book is also a slow burn RH with different povs that really make you root for each of the 4 males once you get to know their motivations. Worse thing is you know that you should be hating them. I picked it out of curiosity and was not disappointed. It explores tropes I usually steer clear off but the writing and the mindset of the MCs got me intrigued so much that I kept on listening. As I write this, the other 7 books in this series are already on queue on my audible! Bonus point: this book made my hourly sports session go by very fast. To get your answer to the question, dive in this series.

Well paced and enjoyable

Cruel Magic is a slow-paced, with bullies and a light romance. The book was easy to pick up every time there was a disruption. I found it enjoyable, well presented and paced. As Rory discovers her true nature, but holds onto her goodness, finding balance is not always easy. But as Rory prevails and overcomes the weeks of bullying, she finds joy and fear lurking in every situation she finds herself in. As much as the book keeps things rooted including the natural bullying and romance (even as light as it was). I am definitely looking forward to what Rory discovers next with her magic and what the boys will do, will they suffer or try harder and break her. Either way, the cliff-hanger is light and sensuous, leaving you with questions and speculation worth looking forward to.

I've really enjoyed this in the end.

To start with, I wasn't a big fan or the narration or story but I really wanted to give this book a chance. I'm very glad I did. the narration still hasn't been amazing but I've loved getting to know the characters in this book. 100% listening to the next one. Please give this book a chance or give a go at reading it, I think you'll like it.

A brilliant start to this series

I really loved this book. Rory Franco thi ks she's just an ordinary girl. Her parents are Joy mages but she lacks any magical ability. But when fear mages burst into her home killing her parents and taking her she finds out everything is not as it seems. She's actually Persephone Bloodstone the long lost heir to the Royal family of fear magic of the Bloodstone family. She's taken to an academy known to many as Villain Acedeny. An she's one of the powerful scions who will rule the school. But unfortunately she diexvt seem to have any powers and the handsome four other scions seem to want to make her life a living hell. But she's tough and determined and want to take down this school from the inside. I really enjoyed this book. The narrators were very good and the story didn't lose pace. It had you really rooting for Rory and I can't wait for the next one in the series to see how she'll kick butt. I received a free copy of this book from the author but the opinions expressed are my own.

Amazing!

This was an amazing book! I loved this, with its amazingly kick-ass female protagonist who is so inspirational, and four males who love to break hearts, or maybe just one. This had an amazing ending as well, with a cliffhanger but it is one that has a certain ending where you can still chose if you want to read the next one, it just leaves you with questions about what will happen next. I listened to this as an audiobook and loved both the storyline and the narrators that fit the characters so well. I definitely don’t regret reading this and would recommend it for those who like this genre. I loved this book!
