Publisher's Summary

Guilt and grief have driven a wedge between long time crime-fighting partners psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. But just because they're not talking doesn't mean the killing stops.

Someone is killing women. Women who bear a disturbing resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.

Val McDermid at her best

From the opening chapter you know this is classic, quality crime writing at it's best and a very welcome return for Carol and Tony. This had me gripped from the start, by the plot, the superb characterisation and the relationship between Carol and Tony. There is some unpalatable violence towards women, however it is not gratuitous and is acceptable within the gripping plotline. This book reminds me just how well Val McDermid writes and that she is in a different league to most other crime writers. For those of who find the relationship between Tony and Carol so compelling this is a very satisfying listen.
I always enjoy Saul Reichlin's narration but did find some of the characters voices a little irritating- this, however is a minor fault as his rich, dark voice is well suited to the story.

I struggle with Saul Reichlin...

...and for that reason I don't listen to David Hewson any more either - his Scottish accent in this one is truly laughable and pretty much everything he announces is monotone but the story's good and I'd happily consider others by the same author but with a different narrator...

great tale shame about the reader

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

his inability to give different voices to the characters. It actively distracted me from the story.

A most gripping story

I just finished listening to Cross And Burn and what a fabulous story! When they say that it keeps you on the edge of the seat it is quite true, I found myself many times seating at the very end of my chair in anticipation! For those who have read all the Jordan&Hill books, it is another step in their "relationship" after what happened in The Retribution, and it gives also a look at what is happening with Jordan's team members. Val McDermid can definitely write a good crime book and this was excellent. As far as the narrator is concerned, it is my first book read by Saul Reichlin and I am pleasantly surprised. I didn't really care much for DCI Fieldings' interpretation (strange scottish accent!) but all in all he did a good job.

As usual, a great story.

Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Saul Reichlin?

I'd always listen to a book by Val McDermid. She tells a really good story and the magic between Carol and Tony is still there. I hope she won't give up on them.

Her characters become real people in your mind. The story was well put together, and very subtly she made different people seem suspicious. I did not sympathise with the killer, but McDermid still made me a bit sorry for him. Her bad guys are always human.
I wait with bated breath for her next novel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can't say one without the other. Carol and Tony. Magic.

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

I will try to avoid listening to Saul Reichlin, to me it was torture. Had the book not been so good I would have given up.
Why did the boy have to sound like Frank Spencer from Some Mother's do 'ave 'em? Even Fielding sounded like that sometimes, whining. If a narrator can't do a Scottish accent he should not try to do it. His characterisation failed miserably.

Do you think Cross and Burn needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I want to hear more about Carol and Tony. The way Val McDermid describes their working together is enthralling.

Great book. Poor narration.

I really loved this book and the story is really exciting and gripping - it was such a shame however that the narration was so distracting. The accents didn’t sound like anything I’ve heard in real life and really took away from being able to enjoy the characterisation.

Not sure if I would recommend on that basis but I’m glad I persevered until the end.

Back on form

If you could sum up Cross and Burn in three words, what would they be?

Excellent transition book

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tony Hill. Intellectually complex and emotionally unsophisticated

What didn’t you like about Saul Reichlin’s performance?

Saul Reichlin reading was perfect for Stig Larsson, but for me too cold for Val McDermid

Any additional comments?

Excellent transition book, where McDermid un-burns many of the bridges that "Retribution" destroyed. This hopefully points to more Bradfield Major Incident Team books to come.

Not the right narrator

The Narrator’s style of delivery and attempts at female voices spoiled this for me. I’ve been reading the Tony Hill series but thought I’d try audio but I’m going back to the written word. Shame.

Truly awful narration in a good story

This narrator makes me squirm every time I listen to this series - his (alleged) Scouse accent is appalling like a joke caricature in a shell suit and don’t get me started on the Scots’ ones - reminds me of the worst comedic accents. Can someone accent-coach this narrator?
This is sad because it’s made me want to give up on Carol and Tony as I get irritated by what I am hearing. If you can forgive this then great story.

Couldn’t put it down.

Great story enjoyed the narration except for the not so Scottish accent.
Keen to start the next one.
