Publisher's Summary

coz-en (kuz-uhn): verb. Trick or deceive. Obtain by deception.

She was named most appropriately.

Cozen Taylor has more than earned her place as one of North America’s most successful thieves. Her name is whispered among criminal elite as the go-to thief when someone needs a heist. She has never failed.

A call from the Miami-based Astor family could change all that with a job that seems almost impossible to complete. The mark should be simple - a stolen family heirloom, the man who has kept it hidden for more than 20 years, and six months to return the piece to its rightful owners.

Nothing is ever that easy.

Three-hundred million for a successful heist. No smart thief would turn the offer down. Cozen didn’t expect a complication like him to put a kink in her plans, though. Sargon Makri - tall, dark, gorgeous, and entirely dangerous. For her life, her heart, and for the success of the heist.

The last thing Cozen needs to be thinking about is Sargon and how she can get him into her bed...especially when he just happens to be her mark’s bodyguard. The thrill of the job has never been more addicting to Cozen, and she will risk everything to make the heist a success.

But at what cost?

From author Bethany-Kris comes a whole new world. A North American network full of criminals battling to stay on top and painting the streets red in war as they dabble in the game of betrayal. Malicious, cunning, forbidden, and violent - welcome to the empires and badlands.

3 stars the 1st 99%, 5 star ending!!!

STORY
The Astor family hires Cozen to perform a heist to steal a Ruby ring, an Astor family heirloom. Cozen’s methods always include cozying up to her male victims, yet she doesn’t expect for sparks to fly when she meets her target’s bodyguard, Sargon.

While listening to the first 99% of this book, I assumed I was listening to an insta-love story. As with most of those, I struggled to connect to the characters & didn’t feel emotionally invested in them. However, the last 1% of this book revealed that nothing was what it seemed! The first 99% was 3-star material, yet that last 1% was 5!! When all is revealed in the end, it made me want to go back to earlier parts where I had made incorrect assumptions (as the author obviously wanted me to do). A lot of this book is really creative and unique, yet some aspects of the storyline don’t add up and don’t match with what we learn in the end. Several aspects don’t make sense or were too unrealistic in my opinion. I’m a very tough critic though!!! Overall, this book is very well written, it just didn’t do much emotionally for me until those last few pages!

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Connor Goff. Aside from mispronouncing REGALE, his performance was flawless! I wasn’t even disappointed that this wasn’t a dual narration since he did such a convincing job reading for the female and male portions. He is a phenomenal actor and someone I will definitely listen more of in the future.

4 Brilliant Stars!!

Cozen is dark, suspenseful, intriguing, steamy and entertaining. It starts at a low paced, but captivating your attention, and getting you hooked, nonetheless.

The story is well-written, a great plot twist you don't see coming and amazing and very compelling characters. The one thing I love the most, is to find a heroine that is strong, independent, and smart. I real badass, regardless of everything she has gone through.

The performance by Connor Goff was great, however, I wish we have had a dual performance (male and female narrators) since this book was about Cozen's story, and most of the audiobook had a female dialogue in it. Nevertheless, I did enjoy listening to it!!

This is a must listen and I highly recommend you give it a try!!

A thief's greatest heist

This is my first time listening to the narrator Connor Goff and he did a great job on this story. The plot was set up in a very intriguing manner. It had hints of a romance but it was a mystery and suspense first story.

Cozen Taylor was a renowned thief because she was basically invisible. She delivers what she promised and no one she interacted with on the heist remembered anything about her afterwards. As Cozen was considering retiring, the Astor family came with an offer that was so golden that Cozen couldn’t refuse. The job was to recover a family heirloom currently in the hands of Jett Griffin, but the Astor family wanted it back. Unfortunately for Cozen, Sargon Makri, the bodyguard to her new mark was excellent at his job as well. While getting close to Jett, Cozen was also getting close to his bodyguard Sargon and the latter one was the real deal.

Each chapter revealed a layer of the story and I found it to be a suspenseful romance. The author spent time setting up the mystery and the plot twist, but unfortunately it made the pacing slow. Cozen and Sargo’s interactions were this big game of cat and mouse and the sex scenes were quite spicy. I would have liked more romance (not necessarily sex) in this story as well. In addition, I wish more time was spent developing the back story of the main character because it didn’t feel connect to the characters. This is a book that I would have benefited more from listening to the last hour FIRST because my understanding and engagement would have been better.

Cozen and Sargon!

Cozen is a successful thief that has made a career of infiltrating herself into her mark's life slowly and steadily so that by the time she has accomplished her task she is never suspected. Her latest heist is to steal a ring that is very important to a criminal family and failure is not an option.

Sargon works security detail for Cozen's mark. He has been tasked with keeping track of Cozen's every move but keeping it professional is an impossible task. They both know that they can't afford to be distracted as if the true nature of their relationship is discovered it could be deadly for both of them.

I loved Cozen and Sargon together. They try to protect each other from what is about to happen and it all culminates in an epic twist that you won't see coming. This is my first story by this author but she now has me hooked. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook and I thought the narrator did a great job.

Great book

Cozen, a female thief, is a very methodical thief. She gets the job done while no one ever knowing what she’s done. So when the Astor family needs a job done quietly, Cozen is asked. A job to end all jobs until Sargon Makri comes between her and the job. A job that involves another man, Jett Griffin, his bodyguard Sargon, and the ruby ring that he has that belongs to the family who hired Cozen. An interesting dynamic in play between Cozen and Sargon, Cozen and Jett and Sargon and his boss Jett.

Cozen and Sargon have a cat and mouse relationship. And boy is it off the chart hot. Their chemistry is undeniable but Cozen is working and working does not involves relationships with men outside of her mark. But their banter, their intensity and the dangerous game they are playing with one another is addicting. This triangle..... Cozen, Jett and Sargon, is not a true triangle. While the three are involved with one another, the only meaningful connection is Cozen and Sargon.

Cool Story

I'm not really in to the sexual stories, but this one has a good premise with just enough intrigue added to keep me interested.

Very interesting. Until the very end.

You know how the Twilight Zone presents a story and in the end, there is always a pivot? This story has the same type of ending but it was not nearly as pleasant as when Rod Serling does it. With TZ, you know you are only seeing part of the picture. The surprise when the camera pulls back and reveals the entire story is the appeal of the genre.

The last chapter in this story was a great big 'ole slap in the face because none of the dialogue, or the situation, or any manner of story syntax prior to the last chapter, made that ending make sense! I even went back to several chapters to see if I missed something that would have alerted me to the, ahem, big reveal. With a very (and I mean very) small comment early on in this story, nothing else even hinted at how this story ended. I feel duped by the author (and not in a good way.) The ending was not a twist. It was a "forget everything our characters said and move along."

Cozen was paid $300 million (yup, $300 million) to retrieve a family heirloom for a crime family, from a crime family. She ingratiates herself into the second crime family and fun ensues.

Story aside, this book is well-narrated by Goff. In fact, for such a wonderful masculine voice, he can narrate the heck out of females too!!

Loved Listening To This Book

Cozen is told in dual points of view. A great male point of view is one of my favorite things and Cozen has one. Cozen has been hired to take back something that has been hidden for a long time from it's rightful owner. Jett is her mark and she doesn't fail when she has a job to do. No matter what. However she's never met Sargon Marki and his appeal. He is Jett's bodyguard and a distraction she doesn't need or count on. I loved this book. It is fast paced and will have you one the edge of your seat and blown away by the ending. Your gonna love both Cozen and Marki. They have some pretty explosive chemistry. This is the love story of two people who probably don't belong together but have so much passion between them it will not be forgotten or not acted upon.
The Narrator did any amazing job with this book I felt like it was a movie playing in my head and I really really thought he did an amazing job. I listened to this book for #audiobookobsession

Great story with awesome narration

This book was so good. I did not want it to end. Cozen is a very sexy thief on a job for the Astor family. If successful, she gets a $300 million payday. She gets close to Jett, the Astor family in law, to steal back the family heirloom. Sargon is Jett's gorgeous bodyguard, chauffeur, etc. tasked to discretely follow Cozen and report everything back to Jett. This opened the door for Sargon and Cozen to get close physically. There were some very suspenseful moments when they were together where you did not know if they would get caught.

Cozen is really good at her job, taking months to set up her mark. Jett was a piece of work and not the nicest man. He became totally and completely obsessed with Cozen and monitored her every move. In the end, I kind of felt bad for what happened to him, but Jett also kind of got what he deserved.

What a surprise toward the end of the book. I did not see that coming. It ties Cozen and Sargon back to their childhood.

Conner Goff did an awesome job with the narration. I was given this free copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

It was ok

The ending kinda ruined the whole book for me, because after the twist, you see the story differently, wich was intended I assume. Bu that create too many plot holes and answer too little questions. Unfortunately I can't rip off the ending from my head, I just can't ignore entirely, but I'm rating this regardless the twist.

I thought the pace of the book was too slow. Little to no action happened, too many details and way too many inner dialog (that due to the twist, was completely pointless and even more unnecessary). If the book was a few hours shorter, I would have like it more because, it didn't have that much story to tell, I think at least.

I can't denied Sargon and Cozen were amazing in bed. I don't actually care for s*x in my MF books, I find them boring. This one though... OMG was the best MF s*x scenes I have ever read! It was dirty, sexy, rough yet tender. But putting this aside, I was actually rooting for Cozen and Jett, because I didn't know why she chose Sargon. She met them both at the same time and she find both of them attractive, but the insta-lust was direct to Sargon. and Jett was nothing but kind to her, both were obsessed with her. Both him e Sargon did shady business... I really didn't get it, until the very ending.

Overall, I had to suspend my disbelief more times than I would like, but I didn't struggle to finish. It was a nice listen, just could be better if it was shorter. Knowing about the twist kept me going, but I think I would finished even I didn't know.

This is a new-to-me narrator. His voice is sexy, deep and growly during the s*x scenes. His pace was perfect, in my pinion. I like he didn't rush between the speeches, some narrators tend to speak all in once and doing so, make me tired. I didn't find very differences between the voices, though. Sargon, Jet, Cozen look all the same.

This audiobook was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Intense

Cozen was a great female character. She was smart and bad a$$. So much pressure from so many different angles. High intensity story with some crazy chemistry with the bodyguard. I never saw the twist at the end coming. Absolutely loved it. This story will stick with me for awhile! Excellent narrator!!

Cozen *****

New author and narrator for me and they both were exceptional.

Loved the book. It kept me interested the whole time and never even saw the ending coming.

Great job on the narration and was always able to distinguish if it was a male or female who was speaking.

Highly recommend.

interesting book about finding love during a caper

This is the first book I've read/listened to from the author and I really enjoyed it. There are a couple of twists in this book; this book is full of intrigue and romance and I was waiting to see how the heroine and the hero would overcome some of their challenges. The heroine, Cozen, is also really quite smart and powerful and you can never go wrong with a strong heroine! Sargon is an excellent and tough mercenary like character who meets Cozen when she's hired to steal (back) a ruby ring from Jett, a mobster like character. They fall in lust/love and they have to figure out how to balance that with their jobs. It's an interesting ruse and I have to say, the author introduced a twist I actually never saw coming!

The narrator, Connor Goff, did a great job, with good pacing. Since it wasn't written as a first-person POV, it worked out fine to only have a male narrator. I enjoyed his story telling. I received this book from #AudioBookObsessionReviewers and this is my unbiased review.

Steamy!!

Cozen was an interesting story.
She was a thief hired to still an heirloom for a powerful family from their enemy.
She manages to infiltrate this enemy and from there on in the plot thickens and things get hot between her and the marks bodyguard.
I loved the narrators voice. It was so soothing I was sorry the book ended.
I was really happy with the twist at the end.
Very clever and no cliffhanger.

A surprising twist at the end

Connor Goff's narration along with Bethany-Kris wicked ability to weave a story make this an enjoyable listen.
