Publisher's summary

First in a new series for listeners who like Janet Evanovich and Tony Hillerman.

On the edge of the Navajo Nation, rookie paralegal Naomi Manymules pauses on a lakeside clifftop to enjoy a moonlit moment. She hears someone swimming in the darkness far below her, and a boat drifts out of the shadows. When she glimpses something that might be a naked butt shining in the moonlight, she decides to head for home.

What she saw was the bare behind of a murdered local sleaze. His passing upsets exactly no one, but his wife can offer only a coyote for an alibi. The police aren't inclined to look much further for a suspect. That leaves Naomi and her new boss, attorney Grant Carson, to take up sleuthing. They navigate through a colorful assortment of criminals, surly teenagers, prominent locals, and a mobster or two and become targets themselves.

Meet the sleuths: Naomi Manymules is bluffing her way into a new paralegal career for which she is not entirely qualified. Luckily, she is smart and feisty and has lived in Sage Landing all her life, so she knows just about everything that goes on here on the western edge of the Navajo Nation. She has also got some training and a lot of motivation. As a divorced, 30-something mom of two, she needs a steady job and wants a stable career.

Grant Carson is middle-aged, cynical, and handsomely scruffy. He is a reluctant attorney, a tough ex-prosecutor from Phoenix who has escaped to a remote lakeside town to practice just enough law to augment his small pension. Since arriving in Sage Landing, he's kept company with some attractive women, but the real passion of his life now is his old yacht, the Deep Inn.

This is a very good mystery book. No laughs

I was in the mood for something funny and light and this book was listed as Literature & Fiction > Humor & Satire so I started listening to this. I never laughed once during this book. Because it's not Humor nor is it Satire. However, I do enjoy the mystery genre from time to time so I kept going once I found that the book was well written and the main character very likeable. Strong mature woman in a realistic setting. The narration is very good too - the book and narrator are a perfect match. Lately books are being marketed as funny or humorous when they have nothing to do with humor. This has happened to me a few times this past year - I see a book listed as funny or humorous and I buy it and read the whole thing and don't laugh one time - because it's a drama or mystery story. Why are books being marketed as humorous when that is not what they are? This was a good book on its own. No need to do false advertising. Just market a book honestly.

This is a Winner

I read the pros and cons reviews before I bought the audible and I knew I would love it. This is a very humorous story that Hillerman would love. I am so glad to have found this series and intend to read them all as I did with Tony Hillerman.

Mixed Narration

I enjoyed the story but the narration at times was hard to tolerate. The narrator was great for the main character and her dry wot but for just about every other character she was on the verge of terrible. Good story and truly funny at times. I hope sequels are written but the narration review is mixed.

bad voices

just wish narrator would just read the book. trying to make up voices is very annoying. hard to listen to. ruins my own images of the characters.

Interesting Story

I really enjoyed the humer in this book. but honestly drug on a bit.

I would consider it a short story without any real suspense. we know who done it early. Reveal: It wasn't the Coyote
