Publisher's Summary

When China launches a blitz attack on the island of Taiwan, the world order hangs in the balance, and the CIA must mobilize all forces to prevent the start of World War III.

The operation by the People’s Liberation Army is airtight, with a high-tech battle network that guarantees total occupation within 10 days. The United States rallies every available asset on land, sea, and air to launch a desperate counterstrike against the occupying forces.

But in order to win, the US is forced to throw out the old playbook. What is required here is speed, audacity, and the application of the most advanced technology in the US arsenal.

As the head of the CIA’s Emerging Threats Group, Don Riley has seen his share of crises, but nothing has prepared him for the choices ahead. With millions of civilian lives at risk, the US must neutralize the Chinese threat without triggering World War III.

Counter Strike is the second book in a brand new series co-written by former submarine officer David Bruns and retired naval intelligence officer J.R. Olson. Packed with pulse-pounding action, realistic combat scenes, and pause-resisting twists, this military technothriller is a must-hear for fans of Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney.

Great, but somethings missing

I very much enjoyed listening to this story, the buildup was very believable and I liked the characters and the use of technology. it was all very well done. The only place in which these books struggle are the battles themselves. The Naval battles are fine in my opinion, they are over in a few pages but i dont really have a problem with it. But the land battles are, to be honest, poorly done and unsatisfying, with the ending left up to a technological miracle instead of letting the long awaited american forces actually fight it out with the Chinese. It was very unsatisfying. Also, the author never really depicts the Tiawanise military other than to say, things like, "they wont last much longer." Overall, despite its shortcomings, it is still a very good story and i highly recomend it.

Compared to some in this genre, this has a high level of believability and well thought out story. Can’t wait for the final installment

A Technically Interesting Diversion

I read lots of military history and some military fiction. I almost bailed on “Command and Control,” the first in the “series,” but stayed the course. There is so much going on that from an “Audible” perspective, it can be difficult to keep track of all the pieces. Most eventually manage to converge by the end of the second novel—“Counter Strike.” There are still some missing pieces, but maybe they’ll be revealed in the (third?) part?

Would I recommend this book or series? Yes, but only only as a “diversion.” I will “read” the next in the series, but—with all due respect to the authors, their work in researching this novel and their effort in writing it—except for the technical details of military assets and weapons, it is a moderately entertaining, yet ultimately forgettable story.

Almost like it came out of the newspaper.

If you enjoy military thrillers that transport you to a place of wondering – could this happen, then this series is a must read. Counter Strike is one of those books that takes you on a journey that is so rich in detail that it feels like you have become an observer in all the action. Additionally, it is populated with characters who are so well developed that you feel like they are personal friends you have known all your life. The action and military interactions are all not just realistic, but very believable – the authors don’t incorporate any thing that makes you raise the BS flag. Without revealing any spoiler, I would like to say one scene in this story took me to a place of personal experience that made my eyes start leaking, thanks David and J.R. I needed to relive that time. Once again Steve Rausch’s narration elevated an awesome story to new heights. I received a Review Copy of the audiobook from the publisher and chose to provide this review.

Action from the start

Great view of how a war with China and the US may unfold. Great narration and attention to detail for veterans.
