Publisher's Summary

Part autobiography, part philosophical inquiry, part sacred quest - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck for the spiritual seeker - a hilarious, profound, and enlightening romp around the fertile mind of standout stand-up comedian, host of the hugely successful podcast You Made It Weird, and star of HBO’s Crashing Pete Holmes.

Growing up as evangelical Christian outside Boston, Pete Holmes was taught that drugs, alcohol, and premarital sex were serious transgressions. Faithful to the tenets of his faith, Pete did not swear, did not drink, did not smoke, and did not fornicate. He did devote himself to one woman, married her, and moved to the country to start a simple life and build a family. Then the wife he pledged himself to cheated on him very publicly. Thanks for nothing, God.

When his attempt at a picture-perfect life failed, Pete was forced to reexamine his beliefs. But neither atheism, Christianity, nor copious bottles of Yellow Tail led to enlightenment. Longing for a model of faith that served him and his newfound uncertainties about the universe - you know, the little things - the scorned believer embarked on a soul-seeking journey that has become the foundation of his work today. Comedy Sex God is his funny, thoughtful, straight-from-the-heart mediation on life, creativity, love, God, and the things that matter to him - and to us all.

Pete ponders the most valuable spiritual truths he’s picked up in his post-religion life and shares a few personal stories - of professional success, failure, and the pain in his balls. Comedy Sex God is celebration of losing something to find something else - a void that became a door to spiritual exploration - a glorious journey into the mind-blowing unknown that never would have begun if your wife hadn’t cheated with a guy named Rocco.

Great book!

As a long time fan of Pete Holmes, I had a biased opinion going into this book. That said, it was really great to hear his full story put together, and while I'm not religious or spiritual, some of the lessons and tips for life in the book are certainly valuable.

Pete himself turns in a great performance.

Welp, I'm in love

I've always liked Pete's comedy. I had no idea he was someone focused on the meaning of life. What a great American story.

More than pleasantly surprised!

I’ve heard much of Pete’s story before reading this book. I figured I’d hear some stories in more detail than I had previously heard, have a few laughs , and be able to say that I was able to support someone I respect and like.
But this book was much more than that... it was a well told story that comes full circle. Pete’s story was relatable and open. There were multiple times where I wanted to jump on Instagram and tell Pete how much something he said excited me , or was an incredible synchronicity. I mean, I’m writing a review and I don’t typically do that. So that’s gotta count for something.

Masterpiece

Simply one of the best books I have ever listened to. It may sound cliche, but I truly cried, marveled, and laughed my ass off throughout this work of art. Sharing many of the same experiences as Pete (e.g. growing up evangelical, going to a Christian university), I could relate so strongly to many of those stories. And I can also now relate to that movement away from faith as it was to faith as it is now: I am loving awareness.

Thank you, Pete, for this beautiful book. It is a gift that I can now gift to others. No doubt, this book will also serve as that gateway god for many others.

Profound truths made accessible through humor and humanity

Pete’s easy going “fun dad” approach to struggling to break away from an unhealthy version of Christianity into something that puts his awareness of the present moment and something that truly prioritizes love and oneness felt like just what I needed to hear. Both for the content of his message and the light-hearted-not-taking himself-too-seriously tone he delivers that message with. If I had any complaint it would be that I finished the book quickly, but this was because it was easy to digest and it resonated so deeply with me that I listened to the book whenever I had a free moment.

Everything I ever dealt with or thought about has been covered and wrapped into a lovely colorful and realistic little bow. I am grateful.
