Why are the hot guys always straight?

Gus is off men, thanks to his jackass of an ex. He’s put his focus on becoming Boston’s first amputee paramedic and doesn’t care that his new rookie partner wants the same job. Or that the straight, married dad is all wrong for him.

Madoc never imagined having to restart his career. But he’ll do anything to make a better life for his daughter, even if it means reporting to a hotshot who wants the job Madoc deserves. A guy Madoc can’t stop thinking about no matter how hard he tries.

The partners strike up a friendship, supporting each other after Gus is injured and Madoc’s ex-wife abandons the family. But when crushes become real attraction and Gus bonds with Madoc’s child, will Madoc be ready to stop playing it straight?

I enjoyed Gus and Madoc's story as much as book one. Both Gus and Madoc have been and are still going through quite a bit. Their story was entertaining to read as they worked their way to a happily ever after. I enjoyed the audiobook for this one. Kevin Earlywine does a good job bringing it to life.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Things start tense between these two. They find their footing then they find the love. The narrator did a good job bringing their story to our ears.

Kevin Earylwine makes a three star read for me an overall four star listen. Even with his beautiful work I still cannot completely get over some of the hang ups that I did have while reading vs listening to the story. Kevin knocked it out of the park with his way of storytelling making it an enjoyable listen.

Gus is one of those characters that you cannot help but root from the getgo. Now Maddoc takes a while to warm up to, his daughter is a scene stealer each and every dang time, loved her! This is one of those romances that felt real, and you could see the events occurring outside of the book world. Even though Maddoc does mess up multiple times, you feel his sincerity when he makes his amends to get back into the good graces of Gus. Gus has his hesitance and oh boy do you get it, he has had a rough go at it but still shows his strength of character in every day and you keep rooting for him to find his deserved happiness.

not bad not great

It’s a rivals-to-friends-to-lovers story. There’s a bit of drama, caused mainly by Madoc’s circumstances, but it never gets too angsty, though it certainly made me tear up.
Gus and Madoc start with the wrong foot, and talking about feet, Madoc certainly seems to put his in his mouth more often than not, especially at the beginning of their acquaintance.
Valerie, Mad’s sweet daughter, tries to steal the show by being awesome, and Princess Lemonade, Gus’s rescue cat, is her loyal, beard-hating sidekick.

I loved this second book so much, too!

K. Evan Coles pens another fabulous novel, a rivals-to-lovers MM romance, set in her wonderful “EMS Station 1” series. This second book in the series is Gus Dawson and Madoc Walters’ story, a story that stands on its own and, like the first book, it captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. Gus, a former firefighter who lost his leg during a call, never gave up on himself, redirecting his passion for fighting fires and saving people to become a paramedic. Madoc Walters is restarting his career and is the rookie EMT at Station 1, working with Gus, who will watch over him. Madoc makes it known he knows what he is doing and his goal is to become a paramedic, the same job Gus is aiming for. Instant rivals, they do not hit it off well on their first days, but as time goes on, they become friends, a friendship that turns into something so much more. Madoc is a single dad of a wonderful little girl, Valerie, a scene stealer and a stealer of hearts, because she not only stole Gus’ heart but she stole mine too. Both these guys have relationship woes in their past, with Madoc’s more current and complicated relationship with his ex, Val’s mother, who has issues dealing with her own demons. Gus is a complete sweetheart and probably the best thing that happened to Madoc, though it took him a while to figure it all out. This wonderfully written story has multiple layers, great plotting with a perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but worth the wait romance. The world building, character growth and development are fantastic too. K. Evan Coles, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 Another fabulous listen performed by Kevin Earlywine, who did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life, giving each a voice that was fitting and believable. His portrayal of the characters was spot-on, grasping each of their personalities completely, from the two leads, Gus and Madoc, to the adorable Valerie, perfecting each role. He set the ideal tone for the story, and his expressive performance conveyed all the characters’ emotions, making you feel them all. Earlywine is an entertaining storytellers and his enthralling performance not only hooks you to the story, but it takes the story to another level.
