Publisher's Summary

Fast-paced, gutsy and intriguing, the third instalment in the Ella Marconi series.

On an early morning walk, a young girl finds the body of her classmate, Tim Pieters, hidden amongst some bushes. The boy's family are desperate for answers, but the killer is never found.

Almost two decades later, political pressure sees the cold case reopened, and Detective Ella Marconi inherits the job. Ella attacks the case with vigour, determined to shake off the memories of her last investigation, which ended with her being shot in the line of duty. But she knows it won’t be easy - after all this time the murderer is probably long gone, and the memories of any witnesses are fading.

Georgie Riley, the girl who found Tim’s body, is now a paramedic, trying to face up to her own demons. There's never been any reason to doubt her story, but when Ella receives an anonymous call insisting that Georgie has information about the Pieters case, she decides to dig deeper.

As long-buried secrets and lies finally come to light, can Ella track down the killer before more people are hurt?

🚑🏥⚰️⏳⚖️Another Gripping Mystery

Man, I’m going to miss this series. I wish there were eight MORE volumes; I would read every one. Many things are great about Katherine Howell’s books: the unique female detective; the dual perspectives of ambulance personnel and police; the almost note-perfect narration of Caroline Lee. But what I’ll miss the most about them, now that I have devoured the entire series, is the way they draw you in from the very first paragraph, even from the very first sentence. Yes, this installment has a few too many characters, and yes, there are a few too-convenient coincidences, and yes, sometimes grown men (and occasionally even grown women) behave immaturely in a slightly-less-than-credible way. And yes, a few plot elements and events are insufficiently explained. But man, there’s just nothing like a new Katherine Howell book when you just need a gripping story with good characters that will hook you from the opening line.

Grade: A-
Bechdel test: Pass.

Worth the wait

I've loved all the books in this series, but this one, the last to be recorded, is probably my favourite. Great story and flawless narration.
