Enjoyable - but not one of Mary Kay Andrews' best

I have become a big Mary Kay Andrews fan, and while I enjoyed CHRISTMAS BLISS, I finished this latest effort with some measure of disappointment.

Weezie Foley and crew are definitely my favorite characters out of all of Andrews' excellent books, and I was very much looking forward to another installment. Andrews usually provides interesting twists and turns, sometimes to the point of pain, but I found CHRISTMAS BLISS entirely too predictable. I found myself seeing each twist's outcome pretty much as soon as it was introduced, and feeling disappointed that I was right. I was hoping for the unexpected, and I didn't find it in this tale. There were also scenes that seemed contrived, almost shoehorned into the story (trying to avoid spoilers here - but I will mention the party Merijoy Rucker threw for BeBe) and didn't seem to flow organically. It almost seemed as if some favorite old character needed a cameo, or that someone had told funny stories about such parties and it somehow needed to be fit in.

And to be honest, I just don't like this new narrator. I could have gotten used to the new voices, although they seemed too cutesy for the characters, particularly Weezie, if McInerney had just used the same pronunciations the previous narrator Isabel Keating had for consistency. Every time she said "BeeBee" instead of "BayBay", I found myself grinding my teeth -- also the change to the surname Stepanik. I almost didn't recognize the word when she said Buleigh. Perhaps these were the pronunciations the author had in mind, but when you have existing audiobooks in the same milieu, it seems logical to try to keep at least some consistency if you plan to change narrators.

Don't get me wrong -- CHRISTMAS BLISS was a fun listen, and well worth the money spent on it. It's just not a favorite. It would have been better if they'd gotten the original narrator for the audiobook, though it still doesn't address some of the predictability.

Another enjoyable episode of Bebe & Weezy

I love Mary Kay Andrews - always download one of her books when I want to listen to something that I can not only identify with and also that I know will make me laugh out loud.

Cozy Christmas tale

What made the experience of listening to Christmas Bliss the most enjoyable?

I love the development of Weezy and BeBe and the way the story is told from each of their points of view.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Christmas Bliss?

New York at Christmas time is magical and this was captured in the book.

What about Kathleen McInerney’s performance did you like?

I've listened to so many MKA books and love this performer.

Who was the most memorable character of Christmas Bliss and why?

Weezy always steals the show but BeBe really was the most memorable in that she had the most transition and personal growth.

Love Mary’s Books

Again in the adventures of Bebe and Weezie, I am NOT let down. Probably the best narrator I’ve heard in a while, she so perf cult captures the characters. Love!

When will they learn?

I don't know if the author gets a say in who narrates their books or if it is solely up to the publisher, but the narrator can make or break a book. The series starts out with a perfect narrator. Then the next one is okay, but this one is not weezie. This lady does a fine job, but all of a sudden the characters of Weezie and BeBe sound much younger than they have in the past. It really changed things for me. Whoever makes the decisions of who to hire for narrator should really think about how it affects the book. Now they are saying that Weezie is 38 and it is probably my misake, but I thought she was older than that, I guess by the way the first couple of narrators sounded. This is such a charming series but while the narrator is fine, she shows none of the sass and fire that I had come to associate with Weezie and BeBe who in the first book was pronounced BayBay. Confusing to say the least. But, overall, still a good story.

Engaging Holiday-ish Tale

Christmas Bliss by Mary Kay Andrews is a fun holiday-ish tale.  It is not really about Christmas, but it is set in the weeks leading up to Weezie’s Christmas wedding.  While this is book four of an established mystery series, I found it easily readable as a standalone novel.  It has Ms. Andrews’ trademark southern setting and strong southern women who have to deal with outlandishly funny predicaments.

The story starts out less than blissfully.  BeBe gets bad news from her ex-husband’s lawyer, and from there the drama and comedy take off.  From runaway pets, goofy construction workers, overly enthusiastic wedding helpers to a fiancé photographed with a gorgeous, touchy woman while out of town on business, there is no end of things for Weezie and BeBe to deal with.

Weezie and BeBe are great characters; they’re strong, sassy, and charming.  The plot is straight forward and well paced making Christmas Bliss a light-hearted read. As a mystery, it wasn’t particularly good, but as a lighthearted chick lit it was a very fun read.  This charming read will delight readers whether or not they are fans of the Weezie and BeBe series.

Finally a good narrator

I loved all of the Weezie and BeBe books but this is the first one to which I enjoyed listening. The characters don't sound as cartoonish as in the past books and Weezie and BeBe sound less harsh and edgy, more "steel magnolia" like I imagined they would.
