Publisher's summary

Our biology is set up to work in partnership with the sun. Little wonder then that humans have long worshipped and revered our nearest star: life itself arose on earth because its relationship with the sun was a special one, and that relationship still affects us well into the era of electric lighting, indoor workdays, and vitamin D supplements.

What are we losing when we sever this ancient biological tie to the sun by spending more and more time inside during the day and surrounded by screens at night? Informed by cutting-edge scientific research and sparkling with memorable characters - from the modern druids who worship at Stonehenge each solstice to the Amish farmers who may have the right idea about healthy sleep patterns - Linda Geddes’s Chasing the Sun analyzes all aspects of our relationship to the sun.

The fascinating stories, innovative science, and unique perspectives in this book make it clear that the ancients were right to put the sun at the center of our world and that it is crucial that we remember this bond as we shape our lives today.

Extremely informative

Though the book can dwell in a few areas, it is overall a pleasant listen that doesn't feel too textbook-esque but still offers a ton of information.

Fascinating

What a fascinating book! I have chased the sun my whole life. There is nothing that’s energizes me more than the sun except perhaps water. The research and history from around the world was fantastic to listen to. Would recommend to all because it applies to every person from every walk of life.

Interesting and easy listen

Such a good listen. I thought it was scientific but easy to understand. Definitely an interesting topic with a lot of research and factual evidence to back up claims. Narration was great as well!

Fascinating book!

Both informative and very interesting. This book definitely made me rethink some of my habits too, and I’ll be using some of the ideas presented over the coming months.

Some interesting facts, but largely common sense

It starts pretty strong, but quickly becomes monotonous. The important points made in this book could have been summed up in an hourlong podcast.

I also feel that it didn’t fully cover the topic, instead it drops into the rattling-off of endless studies that don’t reveal anything more than common sense. Things I’m left wondering: what effect does sunlight have on different parts of your body? Might it be that testes are outside the body because they need light (not to cool them down...)? Differences between morning light and afternoon light? Difference between light on your chest vs your back?

I prefer some curious exploration of ideas instead of a summary of recent studies.
