Enjoyable, accessible read for plant nerds

I heard about this book from the author’s podcast of the same name. Like the podcast, it opens up the world of botany and the role it plays in ecological preservation to lay people like myself, who has a keen but untrained interest in climate change and habitat loss. Most importantly, it’s entertaining and inspiring.

overall easy to follow and enjoyable.

a little lacking in technical detail and the science aspects I was thinking it would have more of. otherwise an excellent listen

A great read from an author I had not known I had listened to before. A necessary read on plants. Has really helped me in helping me advance in my career goals of being an environmental scientist.

Great book

I loved Matt's story, and it is very informative.


I rarely complain about narration, I can hear his inhale paragraph. It does get alittle annoying. I wish Matt had narrated this book. I love his podcast and voice.

educational roller coaster

as as a fellow plant nerd , I did not need to be convinced of the importance, beauty, and complexity of Flora. however, it was a wonderful experience to hear stories of unique interactions between plants and pollinators. I still found myself amazed at how much more there is to learn and how fascinating the tiniest things are. the author's enthusiasm and passion for the natural world is simply contagious

Intriguing, informative, and thought-provoking

This very interesting book is full of surprising evolutionary survival tactics adopted by plants. I've always found plants intriguing and beguiling, but learned from this publication even more ways that they are fascinating organisms. Plants as toilets! Plants that lie about sex! Plants offering "payment" for dispersal of their seeds in the form of a tasty fruit. There is no shortage of fascinating cases in the plant kingdom, and this book satisfied me with some I'd never heard before. I listened to each chapter twice so as to not miss anything. If you love plants and suspect that their role in our ecosystem is not as passive as we once thought, this is the book for you.

Fantastic book

The book itself was fantastic, my only wish was that Matt had narrated it himself. The narrator wasn't bad per say but Matt brings an enthusiasm when he talks that just can't be replicated.

I really loved this book

I listen to the ‘in defense of plants’ podcast and was eagerly waiting for this book. It did not disappoint me a bit. He covered so many interesting things about plants. It was so full of information that I plan to read it again in the near future. If you have any interest in plants, please do yourself a favor and read this book. If you aren’t interested in plants, read it anyway the book may change your mind.
