Publisher's summary

In 1924, Sarah O’Connell, a socialite and spiritualist, is brutally murdered. The local authorities do not have a single suspect. After receiving an anonymous letter, Jarek Videni, a young intuitive from New York City, travels to the American Midwest to help solve the case. However, Jarek learns quickly that there is no single suspect in the case because everyone in the house is a suspect…even the spirits.

This unsolved case is surrounded by mystery, horror, and a dark presence that fills the family’s home and calls out to Jarek. This presence is watching…waiting…and listening. Jarek must use his gifts to read the cards, reach beyond the veil, uncover the many secrets that haunt the O’Connell mansion, and find the killer before they strike again. But will he be able to solve this case before it’s too late?

Great Story with Twists

I gave this rating all five stars due to the entertainment value I had from it over the past few days. The imagination of the story set me perfectly in line with this era of the 1920s. The vocabulary and slang used were very well thought out and made me smile a few times. I had to write some down to look up the definition. The plot was filled with many twists and I enjoyed the mix of a murder mystery with magic. This story used many moments of symbolism from a scientific mind to a spiritual mind. The comparison of a train station to a graveyard was very creative and touching. I highly recommend checking this out.

Amazing story and performance!

This book was a great read from start to finish. The narrator of this book did an amazing job, capturing the atmosphere, and the emotions of the characters. You felt every moment as you were supposed to. Would definitely recommend this book.

Welcome to the genre, Zachariah

I loved this book enough to also buy the audiobook. It was the perfect length for a typical trip to the Cities and back for me (about 3 hours each way).

This book was fun, energetic, mysterious, suspenseful, nostalgic, and easy to read. The style of writing and descriptions of 1924 brings the reader on a nostalgic journey where what is predictable, and what isn't, plays out at just the right moments.

Zach wrote with a purpose and moves the story along at a decent pace. In doing so, it is easy for readers to follow along, especially younger (but not too young) readers. There are some moments of gore, duress, and mature content that may be inappropriate for little ears. That being said, he addresses some very heavy topics either metaphorically or at a level that does not intimidate readers.

I'm excited for the next book to be out and can't wait to follow Jarek on this next adventure out to the beautiful state of South Dakota.
