Publisher's Summary

Brought to life by Meryl Streep and a full cast, this beloved book by E. B. White, author of Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan, is a classic of children's literature that is "just about perfect" (New York Times).

Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte's Web, high up in Zuckerman's barn. Charlotte's spider web tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur's life when he was born the runt of his litter.

Critic Reviews

"Meryl Streep and a stellar cast take us to the barnyard. She draws the listener in with a smooth, consistent delivery and unobtrusive interjections highlighting the emotions of the dialogue. Every portrayal of every character, major and minor, bursts with personality." (AudioFile Magazine)

"[Meryl Streep's] narration is sometimes warm and cozy, like a grandmother reading us to sleep, and other times as dry and witty as was the author himself.... The other performers are terrific, too. One standout: Robin Miles reads the part of the cranky Old Sheep, leavening the character’s dark vision of the pig’s fate with a generous pinch of mordant humor. Also, Tavia Gilbert, as the Goose, has to repeat every word she utters, over and over, at an impossibly rapid clip. January LaVoy as Charlotte is charming." (The New York Times Book Review)

BEST STORY EVER!!!!

When I was in the sixth grade, our teacher would read to us each afternoon a book that had recently come out and “ charlottes web” happened to be one of them. It was in her class I not only fell in love with hearing stories, but also the love of PIGS!!! . The story of charlottes web never gets old and I never grow tired of reading it or hearing it, and this version is in especially Good one.! I am so thankful that someone had the thought of bringing it out.! I have a copy of EB WHITE doing the story Charlotte’s web on vinyl 33 1/3 album ( A3 record set) unfortunately! EB Whites Voice is so monotone that one can fall a sleep listening to it.! So that is why I am so thankful that audible has brought out this Recording. It comes back alive with all the characters. I especially enjoy the voice of Templeton.! Unfortunately the only person I know or maybe I should say I’ve heard of is Meryl Streep I have never heard of any of the other players Whom have done the voices. But they are all very talented and very good and I enjoyed the book immensely and will enjoy re-listening to it again and again and sharing it with my granddaughter.

Beautiful!

I read it as a child and loved sharing it with our daughter on a road trip. A beautifully meaningful story. Stunning in its complex simplicity.

A brilliant recording of a classic

Despite this book having been published several years before I was born, I didn’t read it as a child. I listened to this recording as a result of reading a stellar review in the NY Times.

A wonderful children’s book that reveals much about the nature of friendship, the cycle of life, and the value of seeing and appreciating things for their innate qualities. Listening to this recording with kids of 6 or 7 years and up would be a great thing to do - lots of opportunities to engage on a wide range of ideas and language.

Streep’s narration is a thing of beauty, and the cast of character actors equally perfect (I particularly liked the geese and the old sheep).
