Number one New York Times best seller

The Shadowhunters must catch a killer in Edwardian London in this dangerous and romantic sequel to the number one New York Times best-selling novel Chain of Gold, from New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Iron is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs seems to have everything she ever wanted. She’s engaged to marry James Herondale, the boy she has loved since childhood. She has a new life in London with her best friend, Lucie Herondale, and James’ charming companions, the Merry Thieves. She is about to be reunited with her beloved father. And she bears the sword Cortana, a legendary hero’s blade.

But the truth is far grimmer. James and Cordelia’s marriage is a lie, arranged to save Cordelia’s reputation. James is in love with the mysterious Grace Blackthorn whose brother, Jesse, died years ago in a terrible accident. Cortana burns Cordelia’s hand when she touches it, while her father has grown bitter and angry. And a serial murderer is targeting the Shadowhunters of London, killing under cover of darkness, then vanishing without a trace.

Together with the Merry Thieves, Cordelia, James, and Lucie must follow the trail of the knife-wielding killer through the city’s most dangerous streets. All the while, each is keeping a shocking secret: Lucie, that she plans to raise Jesse from the dead; Cordelia, that she has sworn a dangerous oath of loyalty to a mysterious power; and James, that he is being drawn further each night into the dark web of his grandfather, the arch-demon Belial. And that he himself may be the killer they seek.

Intense & Unnerving

This sequel to “Chain of Gold” was just as intense as it’s prequel. The plots of the various characters was challenging and I had to go back and listen to chapters again because I had missed something. I love audiobooks but they are difficultand when you miss something to go back and find what you’re looking for. It was very well done but I’m sorry I didn’t wait until the third book came out before I listen to these first two. I say that because when we are left on a cliffhanger, I can’t stand it especially when we have to wait over a year to find out what happens! A great read that makes me want to keep reading!

Hard to connect with characters but good book

Cassandra Clare has come a long a way. Her characters are solid and her consistency is a far cry better than it was in her earlier books. There are a lot of characters, so pay attention. It’s important to know who is related to whom.
Frankly, the story is slightly convoluted so hold on. I had to start and listen to several sections over again more than once to understand what was happening. Despite my own inability to listen attentively the first time, second,. eat.al., this book is well worth it.
I so prefer the nineteenth and early twentieth century shadowhunter stories to the more contemporary ones. I find the characters richer and more likable. There is an innocence and an obvious strain to whom they want to be. The contemporary shadowhunter stories jump right into Clarey’s “know it all” attitude and the Blackthorn’s superior distaste for anyone who is not them, with very little change through the whole series. This is my honest opinion. Again, this a credit to Clare’s growth in writing development and maturity.
The only downfall is that I don’t love and connect to any character like I have in the past. Despite Clare’s freshman literary skills in the the “Clockwork” series, it was hard not to fall in love with Will, Jem and Tess. Even though, for me, I wanted to connect with James, perhaps because of his parents, the emotional connection was missing. I almost felt something for Allister and even Matthew but not completely. There are simply too many characters to feel that closeness with.

All of it

I have listened to (I think) all of the Shadow Hunters series and this is probably my favorite. I love the way the Author creates characters and the narrator brings them to life. The story, characters events, twists. Simply the best. Most books I listen once, some twice, this one probably 4-5x now.

Cliffhanger ending was unfair!

I know that cliffhanger books are good. But the part Cassandra chose to do it, was just not right or fair! I love Cassandra Claire but this was like half way in the middle!

Even better than Chain of Gold

The same characters are back and the action is better. No surprise we have a couple big cliffhangers, worth it. Don't want to give anything away so.....just read it!
