Publisher's summary

The king is dying and Prince Makoa wishes to replace him. The mighty Heralder King of Osteanus is privy to many time-honored traditions including the right to call upon the four underqueens as consorts.

But Makoa is only one of many dozens of competing princes eager for the same prize. To complicate matters even further, the woman who raised him, Underqueen Avina, would be amongst his consorts were he to succeed.

When ambition and desire conspire, a young prince finds himself straying from the beaten path. The normal rules don’t apply to royalty, after all.

NOTE FROM AUTHOR: This book contains adult themes and sexual situations.

Awesome

Really great work and the story kept me engaged from beginning to end but i do have to say that until literally the last moment i didn't see how the MC would wim the throne because until that moment i thought that while the character was well done and likeable he was useless in combat and political maneuvers but i will definitely buy the next book in the series

Not bad

Anya Merchant is known for her pseudo-incest stories with fantastical elements, and this fits right in. The prince (adopted) is on a quest to become more powerful and become king, so his mother won't have to service whatever slob is in charge. His mother has her own political concerns to worry about, as well as defending her people from an urgent threat. The prince grapples with his feelings for multiple women, goes on a quest, and - hopefully - develops some emotional maturity to be less of a tool.
It's ok. Not as engaging as the author's "Domestic Decay" series, but I'm game to try the second book in the series and see how I feel then.

S-Tier Female Narration

For the rest of the series, please let Hannah do all the narration with Giancarlo doing only the male dialog. She's a literal virtuoso. Click "Helpful" if you agree.

This author's secret sauce is his to ability dial down the inherent cringe factor of the genre with believable lifelike character interactions. It's a magic trick to make this guilty fun accessible to cringe sensitive listeners. The voice and performance of the female narrator is crucial to selling the magic trick. Male narration of erotic scenes just doesn't work as well.

Another start to a great series...

I have been reading or listening to all Anya's books and find them engaging and exciting. My only complaint with Castle Town' is having to wait for the next book. I highly recommend this series...
