This Story Is Sexy

Publisher's Summary

Coming out is easier when you've got someone by your side. At least that's how the hyper-private Quinn Kincaid sees it. When her publicist suggests a good old-fashioned sham of a Hollywood relationship, Quinn reluctantly agrees. And that's how the star of Jordan's Appeal, TV's highest rated legal drama, ends up with a fake girlfriend - the very real, very sexy, and very gay soap star Lacey Matthews.

In Casting Lacey, Elle Spencer gives us a hilarious new take on a classic storyline, complete with nosy mothers, fawning assistants, and two beautiful actresses who might learn about true love. If they don't kill each other first.

I’m not crying, you are.

I’ve never laughed out loud to a book as much as I had with this book. I also found myself fighting back tears, of sadness and joy. The characters, lead and supportive, were so genuine. The situation was hard to fathom, but still believable. The strong language added to the believability.
The narrator was great. I loved the Boston accent! I would definitely recommend this book and I look forward to reading/listening to more of Elle Spencer’s work. The best audible purchase I’ve made, thus far.

Just perfect!!

First of all, I was dubious. I was wrong.

Narration was the best I have heard in a while. Melissa Moran made the characters exactly who they should be with not one misstep.

But Elle Spencer took a tired and silly premise and turned out romantic comedy gold! From the first page, the dialog is so real and conversational that I felt like I was eavesdropping. The characters truly evolve into who they need to be for the relationship to work over the entire course of the novel, which spans a year. Every time I thought “here comes the plot cliche”, she went a different direction. It’s so well done. I will likely listen to it again in a couple weeks. It’s that good.

Wow, what a roller-coaster!

I actually had doubts about how this one was going to end, almost right up until the end. Wow, these characters went through some serious ups and downs, and bouts of the human stupid, while still remaining endearing and interesting. I don't get wrapped around the axle over just any novel, but this one had me gripped from almost the first chapter, as the characters just inched towards each other like couple of damn porcupines. I'm very impressed. Don't pass this book up. :)

Legitimately one of the most moving romance novels I've ever read, and hilarious to boot!

Couldn't finish

This book is way too long, which is saying something because I love long books. This one was just so incredibly redundant that what started out as interesting and tension filled, eventually became cringe-y and eye roll worthy. The entire book is a back and forth of "I want have sex with you, take off your clothes" followed by "Just kidding" or someone just walking away. There's all these sexual tension filled moments and then the chapter ends and it's the next day. No mention of how the rest of their evening went. It was bizarre. It was the ENTIRE book. I have three hours left of this 11 hour and 45 minute book and they STILL haven't hooked up despite flirting around it a million times. I think Elle Spencer was going for a slow burn, but she didn't do it well because there was attraction/lust from the word go. For me, slow burns need to have friendship build up long before any type of attraction appears.

Lacey and Quinn didn't really have a lot of chemistry, in my opinion. Their relationship/friendship or whatever you want to call it was based mostly on lust, jealousy, and convenience. I didn't buy that they were actually falling in love or that they really even liked each other, to be honest. They were always so rude and hateful towards each other and tended to go for the jugular when fighting.

Quinn was absolutely obnoxious. She was a spoiled, Hollywood brat. She breaks her arm and makes Lacey wipe her ass? Literally. That was a conversation they had. She acted like she had back surgery and couldn't move. It's her arm. I think she'd be just fine after a couple of days. Quinn essentially had a man cold the entire time her arm was broken.

Lacey was just unnecessarily bratty the whole time. I didn't understand what her issue was beyond just being pissed that she got fired from her show, which had absolutely nothing to do with Quinn. I'm still trying to work her out. I don't understand her character at all and I think she might be a bit of an opportunist.

The narration was really great until about 4 hours out from the end. Melissa Moran really brought the characters to life and I enjoyed her reading style, but it was almost like she gave up as the book went on. Probably because she was reading the same situations over and over again. All of the sudden both characters had a Jersey/New York accent despite Lacey being the only one from New York. It was really bizarre. It was completely absent in the beginning and then just randomly started coming out. That's ultimately why I knocked a star off from my original 4 star performance rating.

I won't be finishing this one, unfortunately. I can't get past the constant back and forth with the two characters because it's just exhausting. I'm a bit in the minority here, so this could be a case of "it's not you, it's me."

Kind of hated them.

I found myself getting frustrated at the characters, but then I realized that it was because they were acting in a way that seemed real, so that's why it was frustrating. It was that element of believability that kept me hanging on and somewhat gave me a rollercoaster of emotions. I would have liked for them to have gotten together sooner so there would be less repetition in the back and forth.

Definitely one of the better versions of the trope of fake girlfriend.
