Kaylin returned from the West March in one piece. Now that piece is fraying. She's not at home in the Imperial Palace - and she never intends to be. All she wants is normal garden-variety criminals and a place of her own. Of course, normal in her new life involves a dragon as a roommate, but she can handle that. Kaylin can't as easily handle the new residents to the city she polices, because one of them is Nightshade's younger brother. On a night when she should be talking to landlords in perfectly normal buildings, she's called to the fief - by Teela. A small family disagreement has become a large, complicated problem: Castle Nightshade's latent magic is waking. And it's not the only thing.

Kaylin, Severn and Teela have survived their trip to the West March and returned to Elantra with some of the 10 in tow.
Annarion is still upset with his brother, Lord Nightshade, in what he’s done with his life. Marking Kaylin as his Erenne, using her and everyone to get his brother back. Yes, this is beyond the normally expected Barrani politics and machinations. Unfortunately, Annarion has been changed forever, along with the 11, by his imprisonment in the Hallionne Alsanis. They found ways around their limitations & the Hallionne’s which, along with their group link, impacts how they connect with each other, their environment, their reality, & these structures. Annarion’s stay with Nightshade is waking up the Keep, causing upheavals, and displaced Nightshade himself. When she takes Annarion & Mandoran to see Tara for assistance, they draw a larger group of shadows to Tiamaris. On the bright side is Eventon’s referral of Kaylin to a property on Ash street which turns out to be a disguised Tower with an avatar named Helen. Even sharing with Bellusdeo, Maggaron, possibly Teela & some of the 10, Kaylin is thrilled for the opportunity to have a “forever” home for her lifetime. They just have to survive the 10 drawing two Ancients & an army of Shadows into the City of Elantra and their attacks on Helen and the Barrani High Court. Kaylin & Ynpharion get over their mutual hate at their connection with her knowing his name so she can communicate with the Consort & the High Court. Their cooperation turns the tide in the battle. Bellusdeo’s battle maneuver ends the 2nd Ancient but enrages the Emperor. It’s a major shock when he turns up with the Arkon & she talks to the dragon/man, not the Emperor, about what Bellusdeo needs.
Hvam is a really good narrator and I’ll celebrate the day she consistently pronounces Severn correctly.
