Publisher's Summary

Emma decided to skip the gym and went home early. It was the last easy decision she made because she found her roommate being raped by her boyfriend. She had two choices: Call the cops and be killed by his family's mafia connections or kill him first and hope to survive.

There was no choice to her. She killed the bastard first and went to the one person who could protect her: Carter Reed. He's a weapon for the rivaling mafia family, but he's also Emma's secret. Not only was he best friends with her brother, but she's the reason he became that weapon in the first place.

Mr ALPHA - Those eyes, all those dark Promises

Any additional comments?

Everything changes for Emma the day that she alters her normal routine and walks in on her best friend and roommate being raped by her boyfriend. Something inside her snaps when she realizes she has two choices - turn him in and risk punishment by his father’s mafia connections or kill him and run... The pain and suffering she watches her roommate endure, even for moments, makes that decision for her. She retrieves a gun and kills him herself. Sealing her fate and changing her life. Forever...

On the run with nowhere to go she has only one place to turn. Her brother’s oldest friend and now a hit man for a rival mafia group: Carter Reed... Carter Reed is absolutely swoon worthy, he’s super intense and a totally hot alpha male...

I cannot imagine the horror that Emma has had to survive to get to where she is at the beginning of this book, but to handle what was thrown at her the moment she walked into her apartment…I don’t want to imagine those feelings.

I really liked Carter’s character. He’s strong, but has this sweet and loving side that he only shows Emma - I loved Carter and Emma’s relationship. He’s totally alpha and does everything in his power to protect her.

Now if you are into a lot of description in the sex scenes you won’t get that here. You know when they are having sex, but not so much about what is actually going on. I actually liked the scenes as they were, it didn't distract from the actual story-line that was going on and you could see where they where and when their relationship was growing.

Lucy Rivers does a fantastic job narrating. Very enjoyable :)

HE SAID "I WOULD DECLARE WAR FOR YOU"

Carter Reed told Emma that he would declare war for her, how do you resist a man like that. I know I couldn’t. I absolutely adored this book. I’m not usually the romance thriller type of reader but I’m so glad that I decided to step out of my genre and give this book a try. Emma makes a quick decision in the blink of an eye to save her roommate that was being raped by her boyfriend, kill him. Afterwards, there is only one person she knows who can now protect her and her roommate for the mob that will shortly come looking for her and his name is Carter Reed. Carter Reed has earned a reputation as the cold killer and it is truly well earned. He is lethal and ruthless. He will kill to keep safe the things he values and loves and Carter Reed has loved Emma her entire life.

I was captivated by this book from the first sentence. Seriously, after Emma kills the boyfriend I was literally glued to this audio. Carter is cold, ruthless and vicious but with Emma everything is different. Emma sees a side of him that no one has ever witnessed before and Emma realizes that he is both the cold killer and her passionate lover. Emma is strong and loyal. It is some moments in the book that Emma makes stupid decisions and you have to think, what in the hell are you thinking. But for the most part, it’s an unbelievable ride. SO GOOD.

Is this book worth a credit, umm you better believe it. Buy this book, sit back and enjoy a fun, sexy, unbelievable ride.

It wasn't the narrator, this story was just bad

I am truly baffled at the amount of high stars for this one. I had to scratch my head and wonder if maybe I read the wrong book. The narrator was just fine, but she couldn't save this book.

This discombobulated book starts with Emma coming home to find her roommate being raped and so she shot the rapist. She didn't call the cops, she called Carter Reed because the rapist was a mobster and so was her brother's best friend Carter Reed.

We spend the next 9 hours on audio hearing about Emma's achy thighs and quivering belly at the sound of Carter's voice. She tells us very often how much she wants Carter to touch her RIGHT NOW. In case you didn't figure out from the achy thighs, if he doesn't touch her right now, she will explode.

Achy thigh Emma spends a lot of time blaming herself for not taking care of her roommate. They aren't best friends, they aren't related, but somehow Emma is supposed to take care of a grown woman--Mallory (at least a girl the same age as Emma). I never understood that but Emma is responsible for those around her though she could barely take care of herself. She turns to the infamous mobster Carter for help, but he will only offer it if she moves in with him. Why? Because he has to have her with him, that's why. His need to protect her is so consuming, it's overwhelming. I think I smelled the mhis from BDB.
Soon after Carter proceeds to slowly drop hints about what he has done FOR achy thighs Emma, because it was all for her. Nothing else matters, no one else matters, just Emma. MINE.

OMG, I needed a drink to make it through this audiobook but had no alcohol in sight. It was just jumping from thing to thing and I thought perhaps I should have drank some glasses of wine too, perhaps this story would make sense then. I would be okay with the author's rambling narrative. The transitions were so choppy, it felt like I was listening to a drunk friend talking. The lack of development was just egregious. There was a shallow storyline here, but I was distracted by achy thighs. I couldn't connect with any character in the book. There was a lot of things that were not explained well.

anyway, I don't know if I will read anything else by this author because I don't think I could handle another 10 hours like this one.

I totally love this!

Maybe I am totally wrong in saying this...but Mafia Romance is sooooo extremely hot! I totally loved that Carter was a criminal, a bad to the bone criminal, and I loved the drama, action, and criminal activities done thoughout the story...

I mean why listen to a story about bad guys when they don't do anything bad! So this was awesome... great smexy time and romance between Emma and Carter. Loved the ending...and I really hope there will be a book 2, because I so wanna dive into Teresa and Noah's story! Great Great...

Credit well spent... Great narration...love those shift in voices!

SHE HAD ME GRIPPED BY THE END OF CHAPTER 1

I luckily came across this book while searching for a good listen.. but instead of good I hit the Jackpot and got great. I had heard of Tijan before but I thought her books were more NA than adult - well this listen was definitely adult and now I'm irrevocably hooked.. and excited that there's a second book to Carter Reed which I'll be downloading and listening to straight after this review followed by Cole when it's released.

I love love love Mafia romances.. the males are powerful fit sexy Alpha bad boys who would die to protect their woman, what you see is what you get with them and there's an unshakable loyalty to them too. Well Carter Reed was all that and much much more when a terrified Emma went to him for help.. but she got far more than she ever bargained for when she was caught up in a web of her own making. A twisted web that would reveal long held secrets, desire, emotional truths, pulse pounding danger, anguish, twists, murder, suspense, sex, passion.. and a primal connection to the love of her life who tried desperately to keep her alive. And Emma was no pushover either.

I see this book got mixed reviews so all I can do is say that for me this listen gripped me, its characters entertained me and the suspenseful storyline kept me in its grasp as each Chapter revealed pulse-pounding action, sighworthy sentiments and unexpected events. It wasn't filled with sex, the unbreakable bond between Emma and Carter was formed first but, by Part 2, the passion and lust couldn't be contained any more. But more than this you could feel that there was a deep deep love between these two characters as their actions were to protect the other.. or die trying. Good secondary characters too. Told from Emma's POV but there were a few insights into Carter's thoughts and situations which was told in third person. And I thought Lucy Rivers did a great job at narration.

Worth a credit? Yes and who doesn't love a possessive bad boy who says "I would declare war for you".. and then proves it.

Where IS The Rest?

Where does Carter Reed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would put this in my favorite category but not on my favorite listens.

Would you be willing to try another book from Tijan? Why or why not?

yes I would, I think she has potential for a good story line build up.

Have you listened to any of Lucy Rivers’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No this was the first, I will try her again though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My extreme reaction was who chopped up this book? There seems to be so much more to this story that was deleted out of the book. In the first chapter it throws you right in but it feels incomplete in a way. There is no character build up, barely any description in her story telling. I just feel like this book could have been twice the length and could have been great rather than just OK.

Any additional comments?

It just fell a little short with me. I have a feeling the editor and publisher shredded it. Because the book has a feel like eventually we will know more but it never got there.

Such a Disappointment

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

very poor writing. the outline was good, but the author was too repetitive and editor should have said wait a minute, too many repetitive words ie: how many times do we have to hear "Mallory" to get it, and that was only one example. I do not expect Hemingway but for the cost of this book, I do expect a good listen and/or not a waste of precious listening time.
The outline sounded so great and the other reviewers gave a good rating...but after the first chapter, I kept hoping this was going to get better for me. Alas, NO, for me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

outline was good. author had a good story, but poor writing skills. The editor should have corrected the repetitiveness and this would have made a fast pace listen.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lucy Rivers?

I can tell you, never another Lucy Rivers for me. She is getting better with her male voices, but maybe it is the stories she reads. This is the second story, I have had to stop half way through that she reads. Both of my picks were in the same genre, but she does nothing for the story! So even if the outline sounds too great too past up, I am done.

What character would you cut from Carter Reed?

All the characters were good...but our heroine starts out so strong in the first paragraph, then becomes a wimp who thinks of strong ideals, then is just obstinate & weak.

Whole lot going on, never gets anywhere

This book has like 4 endings, almost like it was a serial novel. If it had ended after 3 hours fine, but it didn't. It went on and on with more drama that never had a point. The hot scenes were almost non existent and it was just plain contrived drama for the sake of a story.

Narrator was great though.

Good and bad.....the story line was good bot something was missing

The story started off good, but the female character got on my last nerve. I just could not relate to her and she was a whinny chick for most of the story. There were numerous parts of the story where I kept thinking get on with it already. there were quite a few parts that just did not make sense, with the way the plot was rolled out. In the end I had to force myself to finish.

Good Story, Hard to Get Past Performance

What did you love best about Carter Reed?

I like that he is a hard man, but Emma knows him differently. I also like how protective he is.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way the relationship between Carter and Emma evolves. I also like the turns the story took that made me suspicious of different characters throughout the book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The male characters didn't sound like men-and the alpha males definitely didn't sound like any hot, angry man I know. I especially had trouble with Carter's voice. He sounded more like an old man than anything else.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No-but I did feel "scared" for Emma and worried until she decided to seek Carter's help.

Any additional comments?

It would be interesting for me to listen to this story again with a different narrator and see how it affects me. :)

Yum! Carter reed

Would you consider the audio edition of Carter Reed to be better than the print version?

The audio edition is just as good as the printed version

What was one of the most memorable moments of Carter Reed?

The most memorable moment for me was when he admits that he loves her,but then again I'm a softie when it comes to romance, and when he tells her that he has always protected her in her life and explains how, great action with romance.

Have you listened to any of Lucy Rivers’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any other performances from Lucy rivers,so I carnt compare this audio book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When carter explains to Emma how he got involved with the mafia and why he done it,all started with her brother.that he never really left her alone she had been watched since her brothers death, that part really moved me.

Any additional comments?

A great action packed story with twist and turns and also romance,a bit of everything.i loved the story and how it came altogether, and have read recently that Tijan is writing up a sequal.carnt wait for that one.
Highly recommend this audio book.

I loved this book, my first Tijan book.

I loved this book, my first Tijan book.

Emma has a great group of friends now but has had it hard growing up. Bouncing from foster home to foster home. Her brother AJ was killed by the Mafia when she was little.
She found her roommate being raped by the boyfriend and then killed the bastard. She had 3 choices, call the cops, get killed by boyfriends mafia connections or call Carter!!!

This book is not for the faint of heart.
I would recommend this book.

High maintenance pain in the butt

What disappointed you about Carter Reed?

This was a mistake, really miserable book with no joy anywhere. Emma was a frustrating high maintenance whinge bag who never learned how to say thank you. Carter had the patience of a saint. The love between the two was just not credible, the characters two dimensional and the reading lacklustre. I didn't even bother to finish once I realised I genuinely didn't care about them. I'll return to Penelope Sky!

What three words best describe Lucy Rivers’s performance?

Disappointing, boring and miserable

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No

Six stars plus ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Who was your favorite character and why?

Loved Carter. Hot hot hot

What about Lucy Rivers’s performance did you like?

Thought she was fantastic. Loved her voice.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

He'd go to war for her ❤️

Any additional comments?

Tijan is one of my favourite authors, add that to the fact that Carter Reed is a mega hot mob boss with a heart, then there is no wonder that I love this book so much ❤️ Love Emma's character, she is so strong willed, all the way through the book you're rooting for her and willing Carter to let her in. Sexual tension is high and I loved the interaction between Carter and Emma. Couldn't get enough of this book, loved the storyline and loved the characters Carter especially). Thank you Tijan ❤️

Great performance - good story

What made the experience of listening to Carter Reed the most enjoyable?

Lucy River's narration. She was excellent. One of the best Audible narrators I've listened to. Perfect for this genre. .

What was one of the most memorable moments of Carter Reed?

The pivotal scene for me was when Carter incites Emma to murder. Much of Carter's power is psychological - his ability to understand other people's motivations and control their behaviour. This scene is a powerful demonstration of how he achieves this.Yet, Carter's own motivation concerning Emma is far from selfish. He wants her to understand why she needs to kill and to have peace with the situation afterwards. (Honestly - you'll want the guy dead too).

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Any scene with Carter and Emma. The night club scenes were fun.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

This book has some dark elements including a brutal rape and it's painful aftermath. It's a love story where both hero and heroine are murderers. Yet, it's intensively romantic and I found the love between the two main characters very believable.I've read amazon.com reviews that suggest this book has some poorly written English. That's not evident from listening to the audiobook - which is possibly due to the quality of the narration.

Intense mafia romance

Carter Reed by Tijan is the first book in the mafia romance duet.

Emma’s story is intense at moments and overwhelming.

The story starts off immediately with scenes which could be triggering, and throughout the story. But there are moments of lightheartedness and overall the story has a balance of light and dark.

When Carter re-enters Emma’s life everything changes.

The story is dual POV’s from both Emma for most of the book and the from Carter at times as well.

AMAZING

Oh My God! Amazing! I always love books by Tijan and this is a great example as to why. I have read so many of Tijan's books and am still to be disappointed. I've been wanting to read/listen to this book for ages and I finally decided to do it - I am so glad I did! The story and romance is amazing as well as so many of her books, and the narration was equally amazing, fitting nicely into the story and giving each character that added bit of description that makes it even more amazing than it already was! This is definitely a favourite book and one I would definitely recommend. If you love books by Tijan just as much as I do, or read the blurb and thought you might like it, I think you will definitely love it. I hope you find you love it just as much as I do. Enjoy!!

ANOTHER TIJAN WIN!

Tijan is amazing at writing swoon worthy book boyfriends, especially the bad boys! Carter was so loving, affectionate & protective even when Emma didn’t even know it. I loved that they had really loved each other since they were kids and had a lot of history together.

I was totally taken by both main characters. Emma was such a badass and I loved the fight in her. Carter was the perfect mix of ‘don’t f*ck with me or mine’ & ‘loves so hard he would die for you’.

The story kept me interested. I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for what was coming next. Now I have wanted to read this book for months and have been putting it off because I wasn’t sold on the sample audio. Please don’t let that deter you! The narrator does an amazing job and her voice really fits the character. I do wish this one had dual POV narration though. I would of loved more of Carter’s thoughts. I regret putting off reading this one for so long. Highly recommend.
