Publisher's Summary

A young sergeant, recovered from battle against Rommel's Afrika Korps, is appointed leader of a dozen know-it-all draftees being poured into the Army's replacement pool. He toughens them into an effective team. As they land at Utah Beach, the Wehrmacht hands out its own bloody lessons. In minutes, one is dead and a second wounded, the onset of a pitiless 10-month ordeal.

In horrific combat from Normandy through the Bulge to the Elbe River, they learn to defeat a skilled and hardened enemy. All pay a steep price.

one of the best stories that I've heard in a long

it's not based on a true story nor are any of the characters based on real people but it is based on real events that happened to real people make the story teller does a great job at the different voices it's entertaining but man is it long it's not Warren peace long but man 75 chapters the Bible might be a little bit longer but not much LOL

Interesting But Predictable Story Line

The story line was predictable and along with its first person narrative the novel seems rather shallow. It would have been better if the story had been told through various perspectives. However, John McLain does an excellent job reading the story and giving its characters different voices in order to make them distinct individuals.

Good but not great

Overall a pretty good yarn following a group of American soldiers through basic and into WWII. You become intimate with the protagonist but not so with other characters and that detracts from the camaraderie so available but missing from this story. The reader sometimes puts on a British accent that I had to remind to understand detracting from the flow. The story is what one would expect albeit somewhat superficial. Overall pretty good considering all of the above - it could have been far better - having said that - it could have been far worse too.

Great War Story

What a pleasant surprise! I chose to read this in honor of the D-Day 75th anniversary. The story was great and the narrator did an excellent job. This makes me want more of this genre. Well worth a credit!

Great book, not a typical war story!

The author has written a great love during a war book. Not your typical shootem up, but enough to make the most battle harden veteran satisfied. I highly recommend this book!

Very average

Narrator’s range of voices limited with women sounding like they smoked 40 fags a day and British and foreign accents were abysmal. Knowledge of author is limited- there is no such thing as the Royal Army - it is the British Army! He also seemed to have the hots for Patten who gets mentioned regularly. Bits of storyline implausible and outside of the combat sections it was cringingly syrupy! On the positive side the action sections were generally okay.
