This isn’t a love story—it’s a chess match.

Sarah Gallagher has always played life by the rules. Responsible mother, high-powered attorney, the glue holding her unconventional family together. But when the pieces on her carefully balanced board begin to shift, she finds herself drawn into a high-stakes game with someone who plays by a very different set of rules. Sarah isn’t sure if she’s protecting her heart or simply learning to play a more dangerous game. What begins as a professional opportunity to redefine her career quickly unravels as Sarah learns to shift her perspective on the many shapes love can take. Nell Stanhope has spent a lifetime mastering control. Control of her image, her billion-dollar empire, and her emotions. In business, she’s ruthless. In pleasure, she’s nothing short of precise. But when her path crosses with Sarah Gallagher, she finds herself confronted with unexpected challenges that force her to reevaluate the boundaries of her own rules. What starts as a carefully calculated offer quickly turns into something Nell never imagined. Because Sarah, who is just as witty, ambitious, and powerful as she is, isn’t just her equal. She’s her undoing. Leaving Nell questioning everything she thought was set in stone.

Sapphic power, control, and ambition collide in Breadwinner, a story about the many forms love can take, and the dangerous game of letting go to receive it.

I really felt Sarah’s growth and strength in this book and her capacity to love in many forms. Cass wrote another winner!!!

This was one of the best and most surprising savage novels. I’ve read in a very long time you think it’s going one way and then it goes another, but it’s always a story about self discovery, self-awareness and self acceptance, and thereby the acceptance and love of yourself and those around you that mean the most. I truly enjoyed this book insights were gained.

Surprising story of love, exploration, and self-awareness

I was a big fan of Balancing Act, and I'm honestly disappointed in how this played out. I wasn't a fan of Sarah's pining after Beth. I didn't like how Beth pulled that stunt after whatever the argument was between her and Jamie. I don't think having an aro main character in a romance novel really works. I kept waiting for the big realization to hit, and yet... I don't really see how Nel is aro, she's easily one of the most romantic MCs I've seen, like

Nel: "I don't want romance, ever." *proceeds to make the most romantic speech, with a big grand romantic gesture*

like, for real what was that watch? where's the epilogue where she buys another one but has it engraved with an uppercase L.

I'm guessing, if there is one, book 3 will cover (W?)ren and Lily. (Only listened to the book so idk if it's Wren or Ren) Not sure what their dynamic would be given the theme Cass Morgan is running with, neither of them really fit the Ice Queen archetype. presumably it would take place in their 20s, during or after college. Maybe Wren doesn't cope well with losing her family and goes cold when she and Lily are separated during college years? Given the environment and Wren's personality, she clearly fell into the "Fell for my best friend" trap. Guess we'll see.

This one was a miss for me

Romance novel without the romance (only technically?) Having one of the leads be aromantic and committing to it might have been a risk but I feel like Cass Morgan really stuck the landing. I'm way more interested in the emotional side over the physical side of relationships in stories and there was plenty for me in this book.

Not needing everything tied up and labeled is a good message and kinda refreshing, if I'm honest. That said, just like after the first book, I'm still rooting for Sarah's HEA. There was a ton of foreshadowing in this one, so I can't wait to see where it all goes next.

love with a lowercase l

This was much darker than I thought it was going to be. I was looking for yearning and romance. Not so. Definitely disappointed, since I normally like both the writer and the narrator.
