The whole is less than the sum of its meager parts

It was an ambitious effort, weaving historical threads together and creating a compelling overall story. The problem is that none of the threads are particularly intriguing, which leads to an even less intriguing final woven narrative. By the end, when the author sets off on other tangential elements which bear little or no relevance to the actual stories up to that point, the listener is resigned to the idea that this is all there is folks.

Gripping!

As a true crime dabbler this story caught my attention. It’s so much more than a story about murder! It’s a veritable time capsule for the people living a hundred years ago.
Very well written and well narrated! A must read/listen for anyone interested in true crime or the 1920’s!

Knew the Story, Loved the Book!

I studied this case in a law class at Rutgers years ago. I’ve been interested in it ever since. Pompeo did a tremendous job keeping a familiar story very interesting!

Long story, monotone performance

I’m intrigued by true crime and found the premise of the book fascinating. However, the actor was quite monotone, and it took me forever to get through it.

Great Story!

This book tell the riveting story of the Hall-Mills story. The author does a great job dissecting all of the theories and in the epilogue, he raises some good questions about those theories. I recommend this book to any true crime genre lover. The narrator does a great job reading this story.

Excellent narrator! 

I like this narrator because it sounds like he is telling a story not reading a story. Pleasant voice, which I find is very important for my listing pleasure.

Had Potential

I heard Joe Pompeo interviewed on Vanity Fair’s The Hive and was excited to learn more about journalism and it’s evolution. This could have been so much more. By the time the epilogue was reached the mediocre analysis just didn’t pull it together. I’m glad
to move on to another book.
