The first thriller in the No.1 bestselling DS Logan McRae series.

Nothing keeps a crime hidden like fear…

‘Stuart MacBride’s thrillers just keep getting better’ Express

‘You can’t be an eyewitness if I cut out your eyes…’

Someone’s preying on Aberdeen’s growing Polish population. The pattern is always the same: men abandoned on building sites, barely alive, their eyes gouged out and the sockets burned.

With the victims too scared to talk, and the only witness a paedophile who’s on the run, Grampian Police is getting nowhere fast. The attacks are brutal, they keep on happening, and soon DS Logan McRae will have to decide how far he’s prepared to bend the rules to get a result.

The Granite City is on the brink of gang warfare; the investigating team are dogged by allegations of corruption; and Logan’s about to come to the attention of Aberdeen’s most notorious crime lord…

I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to have the author narrate, but that person may need to be transferred to another job. Just couldn’t listen to him. I even at one point checked to see if I had perhaps increased the speed by accident. Too bad. Really wanted to know what became of Inch. But will be returning this one.

Might have had possibilities

Loved the author wrote as well as read. The characters are great and very humorous. I found myself just giggling out loud at times. Had to look up the “Bacon Buddy” out of curiosity. Ready for the next one!

Excellent read!

This is only book 5, and I'm already freaked out about running out of this series! The characters are so funny & engaging, the plots so well done, the descriptions so clever - each book is just a fabulous ride!

Best series I've read in ages!!!

My only complaint would be about the lack of background on major characters from previous novels. I know they aren’t there for the reasons they aren’t, but I always love character continuity, even if their stories came to an end.

Great!

This band of characters never fails to make me laugh. I really enjoy that. But I have to say that the stereotypical "angry police captain", who berates everyone working for him (DI in this case), regardless of whether the result is actually anyone's fault, really gets tiresome. It's excessive here. On the whole, I did enjoy the book, but the author needs to stray from the formula a bit i think.

Enjoyable, funny as always, a bit formulaic tho

A solid British police procedural. It meanders a bit. I didn’t find it quite as engaging as previous titles by the author but still worth the credit.

Enjoyable

So very good! I do love this series.

It takes a lot to make a pedophile sympathetic but MacBride did it. And I love the dark humor.

I was initially unhappy that the author was narrating this but, after a very short while, I never even noticed. He did a great job.

Still a great series!

Love the story, but threw me off that the narrator changed from the previous books. I got used to it after a bit, but it wasn’t the same. Maybe cost cutting to read your own books?

Great story but why the change in narrators from previous books?

I understand the complaints about the narration. But it’s easier to overlook great when it follows elite. As far as authors performing their own work, I haven’t heard anyone better than Stuart MacBride. But after four 12+ hour novels listening to Steve Worsley give a Mercury-esque performance, MacBride’s brilliance still doesn’t measure up. It was a shock to the system initially, but after an hour or so you fall right into it. And the frustration of no Worsley finally fades away. MacBride does an outstanding job regardless. And didn’t leave much of any drop off on everyone’s favorite DI Steel. So no worries there. As for the book, it was another enjoyable installment. On to the next one..

Hard to follow Freddie Mercury.

The author did an amazing job reading his own novel. A lot of varied voices for different characters. (I liked his DI Steele a lot more than Stephen Worsley’s rendition which frankly hurts my ears a bit). The story was complex but to tell you the truth, it was like an everything but the kitchen sink kind of plot. So many new bad characters thrown in that I had a hard time keeping track of who was an enemy to who and who had what grudge against whom. I am liking the main characters though, and find the banter entertaining so am going to try one more book in the series to see if I’m getting more enjoyment out of it than cringing. I’m also a little weary of all the abusive DIs and DCIs. How do these guys get away with treating their underlings like such shyte? No recognition of days off, heavy sarcasm, rolling stuff downhill that they can’t be bothered to do, yelling orders in such a crap way! Is this just the way it’s done in Scotland? And really, how much more physical damage can Logan sustain before he’s a corpse. It is getting a bit unreal. I’d like to read a novel in the series where the bad guys are outsmarted rather than violently overwhelmed and tons of mistakes made costing lives who shouldn’t be hurt. Am I just being a fussy yank??? ;-)

Great narration!
