Publisher's summary

Of all the colorful cutthroats who scoured the seas in search of plunder during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century, none was more ferocious or notorious than Blackbeard. As unforgettable as his savage career was, much of Blackbeard's life has been shrouded in mystery - until now.

Drawing on vivid descriptions of Blackbeard's attacks from his rare surviving victims, pirate expert Angus Konstam traces Blackbeard's career from its beginnings to his final defeat in a tremendous sea battle near his base at Ocracoke Island.

Presenting dramatic accounts of the pirate's very effective tactics and his reputation for cruelty, Konstam offers a fascinating examination of the life and business of piracy and the lure of this brutal and bloody trade.

General pirate history

this is more of a general history of piracy. it does follow black beard from early career to his downfall but a lot of other pirates are mentioned that aren't directly linked to black beard. the information presented is general knowledge of pirates. it was enjoyable but not what I expected.

Greatest Black Beard Biography I’ve read so far! The narration was done beautifully, so far my favorite pirate! Yo Ho!

Great listen, learn about Blackbeard

I really enjoyed it, definitely a good depiction of what being a pirate would be like in the 1700s. I can’t wait to visit Nassau where this happened.

The history, it had a very good investigation of it for accuracy.

The knowledge of how pirates came to be, how they operated and what motivated them.

It’s alright

Informative if a little dry. I’ve read/listened to a decent number of pirate history books at this point and if you have too this is good but not what I’d call necessary reading. The broad stokes of Blackbeard’s career are mostly what people have to go on so it feels like there was a good bit of filler in here.
Still well done, I was just hoping for more about the man than I’d already heard elsewhere.

Info not up to date, too much info we already know

Info not up to date, too much info we already know. I was hoping that this would include newer details that have been discovered. Too many chapters trying to educate us about piracy that we already know. Maybe good for someone new to piracy & Blackbeard.

Okay, but not great

I was disappointed that this book spend so little time on Blackbeard specifically. It seemed like the first half of the book was kind of about pirates, some of it Blackbeard, and the rest of the book was a rabbit hole of colonial politics. The worst part was the unnecessary, constant, terrible attempt by the narrator to fake “ye old English accents” when quoting from historical documents … this was hard to suffer and added no value to the audiobook. Oh well, maybe the next pirate book will be more about … pirates. 😒

The research was outstanding

Great story with attention to detail. It is nearly impossible to go back in time and develop an accurate picture of Blackbeard, the author put together the lifestyle and times very well!

If you’re interested in the time period this is an excellent read

Title is misleading

Decent book covering the time period,
but not a book on Blackbeard as the title suggests. Yes of course he is mentioned as well as other pirates of the time.
More of just a general history of pirates during that time period.
