About the Host

Natalie Zarowny is a multi-talented creative with an extensive background in journalism. For more than 10 years she’s worked as a news reporter, producer, writer, on-camera host, social media strategist and producer, creative lead, news anchor, and more. Her work spans topics as serious as the explosion of QAnon during the pandemic and how the undocumented Latino population of Flint, Michigan, was affected by the city’s water crisis, and as lighthearted as explaining why the US is so bad at taking vacations and the bizarre history of period products.
Natalie’s work can be found on Amazon Prime Video’s YouTube Channel, Jessica Yellin’s News Not Noise, ATTN:, Vice, The Obama Foundation, local TV news stations in Flint, and in Rock Island, Illinois, and more.
Before jumping into journalism and media Natalie considered a career in the museum and academic world and interned at the Smithsonian Institution. Natalie has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Emerson College, is a fluent Spanish speaker, a first generation Cuban-American, and lives in Los Angeles. When she’s not working you can probably find Natalie outside riding her bike, hiking, jogging, or walking. Indoor interests include reading three books at once and working on a craft like knitting, crocheting, sewing, and needlework.

A Lot of Fun

Bizarre History is a great new podcast which looks at peculiar aspects of the last few thousand years that don’t usually get a lot of attention in the history books. So, whether it’s explaining how bulldogs came to look the way they do or how sports bras were invented, Zarowny takes you on a delightful excursion through our planet’s past. Each episode is also very short (roughly 15 minutes) so that it is very easy to find time to listen to one.

My favorite kind of history…and podcast

I actually really like studying history. I’ve never thought it dull but it is very overwhelming. I also have always been drawn to the odd and curious side of things. Quirky topics are my favorite. I love these brief, bizarre bits of history. Not only do the random topics pique my interest but since they are so short, each approximately 10-15 minutes long, it’s easy to find the time to listen. It’s a great little treat when you need to take a break or want a fun distraction. I really like the narrator’s voice, speed, expressionism, and fun, honest opinions/reactions like “What the hell?” I enjoy the real audio clips for the bit of authenticity they add to the historical topic, as well as the fake added sound effects for extra entertainment purposes. All combined it makes the reading much more dynamic. I also like how they cite their sources at the end because if I want to learn more about the topic I know where to look. I rarely listen to podcasts even if the topic interests me simply because I don’t want to commit a lot of time or concentration. But these are little gems and I can’t wait to hear the next episode. It’s exciting, too, because you have absolutely no idea what the topic might be. You do know it will be both bizarre and brilliant!

Fun history podcast!

Really enjoyed this one. Good bite-sized episodes about interesting topics, but nothing terribly stressful because these are really fun. Please make more!
