Publisher's Summary

Kristin Newman spent her 20s and 30s dealing with the stresses of her high-pressure job as a television comedy writer, and the anxieties of watching most of her friends get married and start families while she wrestled with her own fear of both. Not ready to settle down and yet loathe to become a sad-sack single girl, Kristin instead started traveling the world, often alone, for a few months each year, falling madly in love with attractive locals who provided moments of the love she wanted without the cost of the freedom she needed. She introduces listeners to the Israeli bartenders, Argentinian priests, Finnish poker players, and sexy Bedouins who helped her transform into "Kristin-Adjacent" on the road - a quieter, less judgmental, and, yes, sluttier version of herself at home. Ultimately, Kristin's adventures led her to a better understanding of what she was actually running away from at home and why every life hurdle seemed to put her on a transatlantic flight to the unknown. Equal parts laugh-out-loud storytelling; thoughtful, candid reflection; and wanderlust-inspiring travel tales, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is a compelling and hilarious debut that will have listeners scrambling to renew their passports.

    "Struggled to Finish"
What disappointed you about What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding?

The author's logic while she stumbles through her path-finding mid-life struggle makes it difficult to root for her. It's kind of like watching someone try and feed a folded bill into a vending machine while they get infuriated that the machine won't accept it. She's adventurous, but I found myself rolling my eyes for most of the book.

What didn’t you like about Kristin Newman’s performance?

The author's tone when reading this book irritated me almost as much as the hollow story itself. It felt like she was rambling in a monotone cadence.

    Any additional comments?

Worth the read/listen for people who are single and in their late 20s or early 30s. It will be reassuring to know that if someone with a compass that broken can find someone, you can too. Harsh? Yes. Honest? Yes.

"Easier to listen to than to read"

Didn't get much out of it other than a few chuckles. Listening to it did make it feel as though the author was telling me the stories in person, which I think made it more enjoyable than reading the words. The performance was the better half.

    "Great girl finding independence story!"

I love hearing about her hilarious adventures. She made me laugh out loud on many occasions~not to mention make me yearn for a vacation to an exotic county! What I really appreciated throughout the whole book was her ability to self reflect & be honest with when & why she was having these adventures. It really is a much more entertaining & more relatable Eat Pray Love~

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book was light and fun, but not what I was looking for. The focus was on her romances, not the places she went to.

    "Awesome fun read!!!!"

I loved Kristin's passion, sense of adventure and learning about how she lived her life. The ending was somewhat expected but the stepmother (s) (without giving spoilers) storyline was much loved.
    Well done!!!

"Very Good Book... But missing something"

The book was good but it was missing that Eat Pray Love thing The story just sounded redundant. Kind of like that friend who goes back to her ex 100 times. You get tired of hearing it after a while.

    "A good, funny, thoughtful read!"

There were moments I was laughing out loud, and moments I was in deep thought about the lives we lead, the places we go and the people we meet. I loved Kristen's narration and enjoyed her crazy stories.

    "hard to listen to"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Her voice was hard to listen to, i couldn't get far into the story because i just couldn't listen to her any longer. I'm disappointed because the title is so catchy i thought i would love this book but i just didn't. great title and good idea it just didn't workout for me. I've learned to listen to the sample before purchase.

What do you think your next listen will be?

i will go back to mysteries

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kristin Newman?

a calmer voice would be for a better listen

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

yes, there were some parts that i did enjoy just nothing comes to mind worth mentioning.
