Story
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

Grant Leap is an orphaned, mortal farmhand in a world where cultivation methods and Weapons of Power are jealously guarded and only passed down among family. He’s not content with his lot; as a Januarian, someone living in District January, he should be living the good life just like everyone else. Food, parties, food, entertainment, and food are the minimum requirement. As an orphan, specifically a reviled Leap, there’s not even a chance of being treated as a human.

After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. Publisher's Summary
The vaunted power of the Mage’s College. Unbounded freedom among the Wolfmen. The best of both worlds.
Recent college grad Sam King was hoping for a backpacking trip across Europe as a graduation present. Instead, he’s going to get a different kind of trip: a three-month stint in the ultimate immersive gaming experience. As a lifelong geek, gamer, and outsider, it’s a better gift then he’d ever dreamed.
But when he jumps feetfirst into the world of Eternium, run by CAL (the Certified Altruistic Lexicon), it’s not exactly what he expected. All he wants is to quest, game, grind some levels, and get his hands on awesome loot. You know, have fun! But the Mage’s College seems to have a very different definition of fun - one involving study, blisteringly strict regulations, aristocratic hierarchy, and tons of pay to play.
Sam crosses the college and finds himself running for his life with a back-talking book that is far more than it seems and a class that no one has even heard of. If he can navigate the deadly college politics and the looming war with the barbaric Wolfmen, he might just find the fun and adventure he was looking for.

5 hours of torture!
To be clear, the 5 hours of torture was the first 5 hours of the book, which actually could have been condensed into 30 minutes of story building. Every person who has read this book has read the previous books, so we all know what happens to the proposed bad guys in the end.
Even better, for 2 whole hours we got to enjoy the detailed description of the main character going through the class testing process, i.e. the class torture trials, just to pick a class that wasn't even on the cover of the book. worse, it didn't matter after the halfway point, which makes the second half of the book almost a completely different book altogether.
I am not trying to be mean, but why spend so much effort building up a world where we know what eventually happens to the bad guys anyway. all it does is makes whatever choices the main character does seem trivial. he could have planned an epic war with the mages college using dragons and space ships, and yet it wouldn't have mattered because we all know what happens.
however, the reason why it is three stars instead of 1 is because the second half of the book is the actual quality that should be a Dakota kraut book. You give me half a good book, I give you half the stars.
they should have dragged the story out a lot more with the content that made up the second half of the book, because there was some much potential to exploit. Not to mention that the story arc is told from a perspective that hasn't been seen before.
and at the very end... just no. don't try to play these two characters off as arch enemies, because they are not opposite sides of the same coin. they are in fact very similar characters, and most people won't buy the fact that you are playing them off as enemies just because one chose an enemy side and one didn't. Especially considering the main character in the other books worked with the enemy on multiple occasions.

... what the actual hell
so unlike Joe Sam is just a weenie and utterly unlikable the book is I constantl with the others in the series and frankly boring. it's a cheap copy of the first book and frankly pointless since we know what that joe brings down the mage guild so this kid sam doesnt even feel like the protagonist in his own story.

unapologelic man child
honestly I cant believe that our protagonist in this book is anything but a man child. even if we're told that they went to college I dont see it. they aren't over being a weak willed fool. I think that the author tries to justify this with low "perception", but as our protagonist is able to perceive some things and another others in order to make this failure of a story work it's not believable.
also as a fan of other stories in this universe the main thing I'd want others to know is that this does NOTHING outside of what we've already seen in the other ritualist books. so this seems like an easy "pass".

Depends on your perspective
This book can be booth great and terrifyingly boring, depending on, if you’ve read/listened to the completionist chronicles. I did and it caused me to be honestly bored with good 75% of the book, be it the skills, enemies or the areas that our MC Sam experiences, they’re all mostly repetition from the original series. I understand that it’s because Sam is also a mage like class but that’s exactly the problem, I feel like this book would have been so much better if this was a book about some obscure meele class and not another mage. Also personally, I didn’t like the way the MC acted, it’s hard not to compare every single thing in this book to the ritualist series but I doesn’t change the fact that I liked Joe better.
Now if I was someone who hasn’t read the original series (or relistened to it like a week before starting this one) I would probably enjoy it far more. The word in this series is interesting and really makes the reader/listener wonder what else is in there. The game system is also really enjoyable to hear about, especially all the possible class variants that exist. There’s also that healthy does of humour that comes with most of the system prompts, which made me chuckle from time to time (although again I felt like some of them were straight up copied from the original series). Overall this book is somewhat hard to grade as I can see how many people would like it and I would as well if not for the circumstances (again, I literally listened to the 3 book from ritualist like a week before, Rexus not included). To conclude, this is a book might recommended to people who haven’t read the Ritualist but then again they might just go and read it first and as for all the people that did read it already...honestly I don’t know, you might enjoy it or you might not, your credit not mine. Do what you will with it.
Also Nick Podehl did a great job as always, I especially enjoy his female voices, they just hid the right spot for me.

Hold off buying
There’s an edit issue with the book as others have also noted. As of 16 March 2020, the book still isn’t fixed so I would hold off for a few days yet you’re thinking of buying.
Other than that, I’d really recommend as it’s a good listen. I don’t agree with the other reviews saying it’s more of the same and boring, it’s an interesting story set in the huge world.

More Eternium and loving it
I was a little skeptical about this one due to it not being purely Dakota’s work but I loved it. Dakota fast became one of my top two writers when I first heard Dungeon Born (I only listen as terrible dyslexia). I have bought every audible release and loved the lot. I was a little worried I would not like this one due to the unknown (to me) writer and I was pleasantly surprised. I would have thought it was written just by Dakota himself if it wasn’t for the name on the cover art so well done to James. He really captured the essence of the world Dakota has been creating all this time and has added a very good mix of interesting characters that I hope to hear more about in future titles. The right amount of humour and snark from the protagonist/s and a well paced development makes this book an easy listen. I will be listening to all the Mountaindale press books again (some for the 5th time) in order of release and will not feel I have completed my mission if I left this one out as it is definitely one of the Eternium family. Thanks for your excellent writing.
Also the voice acting was brilliant but I don’t really have to say that as I’m sure everyone thinks Nick podehl is awesome.

bibliocrazy book
I was hesitant at first because this book is written by both JH and DK so in my head I thought it could go one of two ways. Really suck or a legendary story. Fortunately it was the latter, this book is amazing, it isn't as funny as the completionist series but the MC and the plot is definitely entertaining. But never fear the puns are still there.. The story starts off the same but about 25% in that's where the story diverges. This book has everything you could want from a litrpg and most of all it provides some witty background information in relation to the compleistist series. I'm invested hurry up book 2!!!

slower paced good times
although the beginning felt a little slower than other books in the series, i loved the humor and references throughout the book. I had a great time listening once it was up to speed.

Ignore the negative reviews
I avoided this for a while after reading a negative review that it was a carbon copy of the main story arc. I am annoyed that I didn’t pick it up sooner because it’s quite different to the main arc.
I hope that poor readership is not what stopper the further development of this story line as I would like to listen to more of the story.
Minor spoiler but some of the characters turn up in the main arc and without this story a reader misses quite a bit that makes the interaction more special

Great start to an intriguing story
Enjoyed seeing the MC stick up for himself, take risks and embrace challenges on his way to developing a quite unique class. Looking forward to the next book to see where his character build takes him. Read the kindle version and enjoyed the Narration on the audiobook too. The pompous mages are painted in a such a poor light, leaving you itching to see them taken down. I welcomed the different perspective of these characters operating in the completionist chronicles universe. I Powered through the audiobook in a couple of days while I did chores around the house. Highly recommended.

Strong addition to the Series
Don't worry that the dual author will not match up, this is definitely the same strengths as the core series. Looking forward to the next one

Fun and different
The characters are enjoyable, the plot progresses well with decent pacing, the writing is solid, and the main character's class is pretty unique. A good first book and I'm excited to read more.

I don't know what the book wanted to achieve.
You would think that the end point of this book would be the shatter a people final battle.
Think again... rather than juxtapose the main story fight with what happened on the wolfman side and how they delt with the fallout of their own spell backfiring. Its just the origin story or a class which is supposedly on the same level as the archmage's.
The MC really has no distinctive identity other than fighting for the opposite side of the ritualist's storyline. The main villian was terribly executed and was so corny! he basically did the whole evil guy monologue and blew himself up because he was an 'arrogant noble mage' - oh but not before giving his journeyman blueprint to the paper guy.
There is alot of recycling and reusing story elements and game details that have been explained in other books.
The next step was to introduce other races and build up humanities foothold in Ardania. This seems like a step back in storytelling. In my opinion this is the worst book of the completionist series.

Where's the next one
Good book, I loved the way it paralleled and in some ways proceeded the Ritualist. I am a fan of the troll nation series and liked the nods that it got. It's nice to think that the two worlds are somehow linked, with the software compabies mentioned, though I don't remember if they were in the other books.
You can tell the influence that Dakota Krout has had on the book, the way that CAL's system messages are written in matches perfectly with the rest of the series.
The L.A.W. sounds like the ritual the wolfmen were using that joe interupted too.
Only negative was that occasionally the narration would skip sections of the book. Would mostly not have noticed but I was reading along with it and there was also a point where it went from a conversation before they saved Finn right into the middle of a conversation with Finn.
Can't wait to see what the wolf pack will be going on to do next.
