Publisher's Summary

Josie doesn’t need any help raising her son.

Pregnant at 16, Josie learned the hard way about men and their empty promises. She picked herself up and is raising her 11-year-old son. By herself. And that’s the way she intends it to stay. Unfortunately, her impressionable boy becomes fascinated by the scruffy, intimidating biker who lives next door.

The scars on Holt’s face are only the most visible of his wounds.

Out of the hospital after being attacked in his own damn house, Holt is coming to terms with the fact that his scars frighten people. Like his now-ex-girlfriend, who ran after one look at him. Like his redheaded neighbor, who hauled her boy away as if Holt was a serial killer. Fine. He’ll give the pretty bartender all the space she wants.

The Shadowlands will bring them together....

When Josie starts bartending in the exclusive, private club, she discovers her neighbor is a member. And a Master - a skilled, powerful Dom who can make her fantasies come true. Slowly, the firefighter breaks down the walls around her heart, teaching her how to trust. How to love...

But when her son’s choices lead to disaster, can their relationship survive?

Holt was such a sweetie..normally doesn’t describe Dom

Josie and Holt’s story was so sweet. Oh sure, there was hot sex and Dom behavior, but overall it was a sweet story. I wish we had some more information in what happened to the little boy Brandon (I know, I was too involved in the story☺️), but I thoroughly enjoyed the kids dilemma about friendship, change, bullies, etc...Holt has a way with the kids and watching him with Carson and all of his puberty angst was brilliant.
Now while there were times that Josie was working my nerves, I had to appreciate that she on her own since she was 16 so she had very little experience with relationships and men in general..I loved that she was very open about her insecurities and when she needed to apologize or adjust her thinking, she was mature enough to do so and quickly.
Holt knew Josie was his and he staked his claim on her without hesitation.

Really curious about the new security guard and his story though 😉

Opening Up

I love Josie's strength and her fierce determination to care for herself and her child. Her opening herself to Hold is more poignant because it shows true trust and caring. Holt shows patiences and understanding. He isn't perfect but he owns up to his mistakes. I love how his love is bot for Josie and her son.

I also love the dual narration.

I really enjoyed this story. Especially with the other sub plots that where left from her other books. I can not get enough of the Masters of the Shadowland series.

great book

I loved this story. The author does a great job showing that BDSM lifestyles are not sleazy. I love the push for honesty and the friend family support dynamic.

Wonderful as always

I have enjoyed all of Cherise’s books that I have read. The Shadowland series is my favorite in this genre. The stories are always sweet in the end. With some mystery and action thrown in. The narrators are always exceptional as well. Thank you to the author and narrators.

Hawt!

These stories just get better and better! Each one is unique and kept my attention until the last word! Noah Michael Levine and Erin Deward sucks you right into it as though you are watching every second with the narration of it!

Could we PLEASE have a DOM who isn't omniscient?

I think this series is getting long in the tooth. There is nothing new here. The male DOMs continue to have super powers allowing them to understand their submissives’ needs without the subs themselves knowing what they are missing. If anything, as the series progresses, the roles are becoming even more polarized: the DOMs are more perfect, more inflexible and able to see into the subs minds, the subs all have emptiness in their lives that can only be filled by a D/s relationship. They find fulfillment in humiliation, pain and service, in return they receive the big O, are relieved of the need to ‘think’ and feel joy in pleasing their masters.

Just once I’d like to see one of these supermen push too far and have their subs safe word out. Is that too much to ask? It probably wouldn’t pan out though, in these books subs who make mistakes apologize tearfully and are punished severely, DOMs who make mistakes toss apologies over their shoulder and all is forgiven. I’ve read most of the books in the series and the only DOM to show frailty was in fact a DOMME, a woman, who we discover was working through anger issues that she had with men, none of the other masters, all men, were ever seen to have anger issues to deal with.

In this book the boilerplate is the same, the DOM recognizes a single mom ‘is a sub’ before she herself does. He introduces her to the lifestyle, takes over a large part of her life, helps her with her son and rewards her by relieving her of the responsibility of speaking without permission or having to choose what food to eat. We see many of the characters from earlier books but other than an increasing number of babies and pregnancies there is no character development.

love these books!

Only criticism is really minor: it has to do with one of the narrators. As much as I admire the different voices and speech patterns of each character, and the narrators' ability to maintain them throughout the stories, there's a problem with Noah Michael Levine's speech. i would really appreciate it if. before the next book arrives. he'd master the "r" sound in "through". As spoken now, it comes out as "though". it's such a small thing, but whenever it happens I get thrown right out of the story. He is otherwise an extremely talented narrator; I look forward to enjoying his talents with many more characters and stories.
