Publisher's Summary

From one of the country's most recognizable journalists: how becoming a grandmother transforms a woman's life.

After four decades as a reporter, Lesley Stahl says the most vivid and transforming experience of her life was not covering the White House, interviewing heads of state, or any other of her stories at 60 Minutes. It was becoming a grandmother. She was hit with a jolt of joy so intense and unexpected, she wanted to "investigate" it - as though it was a news flash! And so, using her 60 Minutes skills, she explores how grandmothering changes a woman's life, interviewing her friends, like Whoopi Goldberg; her colleagues, like Diane Sawyer; and the proverbial woman next door.

On top of these personal accounts, she interviews scientists and doctors about physiological changes in women when they have grandchildren, anthropologists about why there are grandmothers in evolutionary terms, and psychiatrists about the therapeutic effects of grandchildren on both grandmothers and grandfathers.

All through the book, Stahl shares her stories about her own life now with two granddaughters, Jordan and Chloe; how her relationship with her daughter, Taylor, has changed; and how being a grandfather has affected her husband, Aaron.

In an era when baby boomers are becoming grandparents in droves, when young parents need all the help they can get with raising their children - and with a grandmother in the running to be our next US president - Stahl's book is a timely and affecting listen that redefines a cherished relationship.

Wow, both entertaining with a bunch of scientific facts. My heart understands this and more now that I’m a grandmother. Great book and a fantastic story of life and love of a devoted grandmother.

A guide for grandparenting. Just as DR. Spock gave us his knowledge of raising children so does Lesley stahl .

Great book. Lesley is right on with understanding of grandparents today. Remarkable insight. So glad I listened to this book. Every grandparent should read this book. And I'm a republican.

Couldn't finish it

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Leslie Stahl could have made this book less about her and the wealthy people. It was insufferable as she talked about buying a $64 doll (one of three) for her granddaughter and interviewing someone "at the Four Seasons"... why did she have to say that? Who cares where she did the interview. She brags about her elite life in the news business which has nothing to do with being a grandmother.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Yes, actually. She reads stiffly.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No... there was no new information or insight, except learning about her personal angst and inabilities.

Any additional comments?

I also worked in the news business and covered war zones around the world while raising my daughter. Other mothers do equally challenging work. She is not special.

Amazingly accurate

I recently became a grandmother for the first time 20 months ago and I think I have removed all of the feelings and events that Leslie expressed in her book. I never thought I wanted to be a grandma, And now I can't ever imagine not being one. My grandchildren are soul of my heart!!! Thank you Leslie for sharing a different side of yourself and a perspective that really helps if there is any way to truly explain how it feels you did an amazing job.
