I was worried about this book being published in 1999 and I found it surprising how relevant it still is. His concerns, brainstorming it parallels me and my fiancé as we are talking about this now. We want kids some day. It was touching and above all it was really helpful. I listened to this after American Savage and it made for a better listen.

Glad I got it.

An interesting and honest report of a difficult subject! I am better fro having listened to Dan Savage's journey.

Great read

I love the sound of Dan Savage's voice; I've enjoyed listening to him since I went through the This American Life archives, so I love picking up the audible books that he narrates.

I delayed listening to The Kid because I wasn't certain how relevant it would seem today. Other than a few minor references that make it clear that this story wasn't written yesterday (mostly references to where LGBT rights are, or how living in Seattle was then) this story is deeply touching. It's about trying to make a family, how people relate to each other and define their roles, and of course, Dan Savage being himself. A very sweet, funny, and touching story. Highly recommended!

Funny and Fun

Dan Savage has a way with words and tells his story with honesty and humor. I wasn't adopted and don't know anyone who's been adopted and still found this story very interesting and didn't want to stop listening. I think I finished it in a day. I found him through his podcast and plan to listen to his other books as well. Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts.

Good listen

I absolutely loved listening to this book with my husband. We finished it in 3 days. I love listening to Dan Savage, thank you for sharing such a wonderful time in your lives.

Wonderful story

I always love a book narrated by the author, so I appreciated this but Savage's delivery can be a little flat sometimes. He also occasionally includes too much detail (or the editor just didn't care) - I'm not referring to his comments about sex or gay life - that is usually interesting - but sometimes his stories wind around each other before he gets to the point. Nonetheless, my husband and I are preparing to do a domestic open adoption so this book was invaluable.

Very engaging but not excellent

Honest, funny, sad, thought-provoking; this book holds all of it! I’d highly recommend to any parent or parent-to-be for a look inside a gay couple’s adventure, challenges, obstacles - fair and very unfair - involved in open adoption of their son.

Honest, great read!

I listened to Dan's books in reverse chronological order, and even though there is something like 15 years between the events in them, they are both filled with memories of places for my stomping grounds. It sounds corny, but I laughed, I cried, and I rolled my eyes... but mostly I smiled at the way things have turned out. :)

Great walk down memory lane

I loved this book - I would find myself simultaneously laughing and crying (happy tears!) in the middle of the street.

It's the sweet story of adults transitioning from adults to parents and all the nerves and excitement in between.

It did, however solidify a 'no baby policy' in my mind for at least another 5 years.

Touching

What did you love best about The Kid?

The humor. Good to know someone who shares my sense of humor.

What did you like best about this story?

I didn't always agree with Mr. Savage but his story held my interest and in spite of my opinion on gay adoption I found myself rooting for this couple and their quest to get a 'kid'.

What does Dan Savage bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Wonderful speaker. It was like sitting across from a friend. The intonations and irony were priceless.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

That honesty and sincerity outrank sexual orientation.

Any additional comments?

I was curious as to what Dan and Terry looked like because Dan's own descriptions are less than flattering. But they're two very handsome men who met all my expectations! You can't come away from this story without liking each of them personally.

Keep Writing Mr. Savage and I'll Keep Buying!
