One of Essence’s 50 most impactful Black books of the past 50 years

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As first lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the US and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Editorial Review

The memoir we're Becoming eager to hear

Her dance moves. Her vegetable garden. Her advocacy for girls everywhere. Her humility despite being one of the best-known names in the world. There are so many things to love about Michelle Obama that even those who might disagree with her husband’s politics admit to being fans. So much anticipation surrounds this, her official memoir, and specifics about what it will ultimately contain are few, but we can safely bet on it to be inspiring. No matter which boxes you check on your ballot, it’s hard not to be in awe of what this remarkable woman achieved in her path from the South Side of Chicago to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and beyond. When she revealed the book cover, the author tweeted: “As I prepare to share Becoming this fall, I hope you’ll also think about your own story, and trust that it will help you become whoever you aspire to be.” Can you imagine what it’ll sound like in her own words, via her own strong, familiar voice? I, for one, can hardly wait. —Courtney R., Audible Editor

Whew. What a story.

From the South Side of Chicago to the WHITE HOUSE! Whew. Let that sink in. As a black woman, this book moved me differently than any other book I’ve read in recent memory. Letting me know it’s ok that I’m still “Becoming” and that I have the right to enter any space I want to! I loved Mrs. Obama before, but I was introduced to Michelle Robinson Obama and I love her even more. She read her own story like she was talking directly to me and I loved that. It was like sitting down at your Auntie House and she was telling you all tea over a good glass of wine! I’m so thankful for her sharing her story and being so open and honest about it all. What a story!

Exquisite!

I love this book, I loved the story… It was so raw, and authentic and compassionate and beautifully written. Thank you Michelle Obama for all that you do and all that you are and for opening your door.

Very well written and read.

This book opened my eyes to a lot of things. I’ve always had mad respect for the Obamas but this heightened that respect. Michelle Obama is very open and transparent in this book.

Absolutely stunning

Everyone should be required to read this one. It’s just so beautiful and such an important reminder of life’s lessons. She has so much to share, some funny, some sad. Very very wonderful book.

Boring

I was totally disappointed. The subject Material was too concentrated on her childhood. Also felt it was incredibly negatively.

Definitely worth an Audible credit

Well, heck!! How am I supposed to go out writing a review for a masterpiece like ‘Becoming.’ I truly feel that I cannot do the book justice. To put it simply, I loved this book!! As a storyteller, Michelle was perfect; her warmth, intelligence, and straightforward manner of speaking all carried through as she described her childhood experiences all the way to her two terms as Flotus. I couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of admiration as she detailed some of her struggles. Furthermore, as a listener, it was fascinating hearing the stories that helped Michelle become who she is today. I will admit that being the nosy person that I am, I particularly enjoyed her behind-the-scenes account of living in the White House. However, it was all amazing. Overall, I find it difficult to write a more detailed review simply because I loved everything about this book. I laughed in parts, got teary-eyed in others, but mostly, I got a feeling of hopeful energy from this book. I doubt that there is one person that wouldn't benefit from reading 'Becoming' regardless of political affiliations as, despite being involved, this biography isn't explicitly about politics. I give this book full marks and would not hesitate to recommend this book, especially for those of us who could use a little hope in these grim times.

Very Slow

I have to admit that I'm disappointed with this book. It's incredibly slow so I've been listening to it in double time. I've been trudging through it looking for the pearls of wisdom or deep insight, but it's mostly filled with the minutia of the day to day tasks. I've recently watched the documentary "fed up" and the ineffectiveness of the Move campaign. I was hoping to get Michelle's viewpoint on the challenges and why she gave up on her commitment to real change but she simply glossed over this topic only offering a high level synopsis.

Wow, not the good way

Can we file this book in the Hate Speech or Fascist section? 19 plus hours of her segregating people by race and gender. Then it wraps up with disdaining rant against a free election and voice of society.

One of the best books I've ever read/listened to

I got so involved with Michelle's story that I stopped listening to Spotify at the gym and in the car to listen to this book. Eventually, I'd also listen to it at work in between calls. Parts of her story are very similar to mine and her upbringing was very similar to my own and my siblings'. Such an inspirational book should be read or listened to by every girl and woman out there. I'm half afraid now that I have to choose another book to listen to because I don't think it's going to be easy to top Michelle's narration. I miss her voice already :)

We still don’t deserve Michelle Obama

This was a great way to spend twenty hours. I didn’t think I could long for The Obamas any more than I already did, but this book reminds you how we had smart, gracious people in the White House.

Heartwarming, inspiring and just wonderful.

I loved every moment of this book. She doesn't try to sugarcoat her struggles and really shared in a way that she hasn't before. I feel privileged to have read about our FFL's extraordinary and inspiring journey. I also feel empowered to make my own journey, my own.

Wonderful

I had high hopes, and at first I thought the story moved a bit slow - but there was a reason for every little story told. The book ties her stories wonderfully together, and I have a much better undertaking of who Michelle Obama is and what drives her. I am left so very impressed and utterly inspired.

Fascinating & Encouraging

Endearing and enthralling to hear the very ordinary but incredible story of Michelle and her family. Such figures of hope.
