Political intrigue, culture clash and romance make a stirring mix in this award-winning follow-up novel to the acclaimed Shards of Honor.

In the wake of interplanetary war, former commander Cordelia Naismith has deserted her own planet to marry the leader of the defeated enemy, Aral Vorkosigan. On his home planet of Barrayar, two rival factions are eyeing the recently vacated throne, and Aral, recently appointed Regent of Barrayar by the Emperor on his deathbed, must stand between them.

Lord and Lady Vorkosigan, Aral and Cordelia struggle to establish stability in a fragile government thrown into confusion by the transition of power and the threat of civil war. When a palace coup endangers the government, their lives, and her unborn son, Cordelia takes action to secure the safety of her new family and new home.

This is, to some extent, the tale regarding the circumstances around the birth of a baby. It is true the baby is of noble blood and the circumstances are full of treachery and blood, with the heroics of mother outshining the wisdom of generals. It, however, is still his tale and his birth is both a delight and a bitter draught. Born into power and into pain in sorrow, this baby's coming heralds much.

This is the one that explains Miles' physical limitations to us all, for the books to come. It also gives us a good look into Barrayaran politics, which is important to understanding the "why" of most of what happens later.

These books are ALL wonderful, and you can't go wrong reading, um, listening to them.

I've come to really love this author. the pace is fast, the content is dense but lordy do they know how to string things together in a way that pulls your emotions and adoration into these characters

Get married, have a kid, what could possibly go wrong? Well, I read this in Sept 2023, and it turns out a lot could go wrong, an such interesting ways! Definitely worth reading and rereading!

This novel was a bit slow to develop for me. Initially, time is spent in Cordelia's integration into Barrayaran society. It felt a bit off to me that Cordelia is now relegated to attending parties, learning how to dress for her role, and in learning the customs and manners of her new home. A bit boring for me but a realistically a valid look at the expectations on Cordelia in her new life. I think it took about a third of the way through this book before it really took off for me. Action scenes are very well constructed. Court intrigues and power struggles really take center stage here. I think the best critique I can give is that it was very late in the story when I realized that these characters were not the main ones in this saga. This led to the disheartening realization that these characters will soon be left behind which made me realize just how invested I had become in this story. I must say that I am not entirely enamored with all parts of the story - I am not really a romance aficianado. Shards of Honor was more of a mature romance so it was a bit less cringey than the couple in Barrayar. While it does add a look at the cultural aspects of the society, I really just dislike romantic tropes. I feel like this might be included as a forerunner to whether and how Miles will be accepted into Barrayaran society. I'm also wondering if Cordelia's story is more about her impact on the culture than anything else. Time will tell.

The series really takes off in this book.

Barrayar starts the same day as Bujold’s first Vorkosigan novel, Shards of Honor, leaves off. It fills in the drama that takes place during Cordelia’s pregnancy with Miles that was alluded to in The Warrior’s Apprentice. Written with the typical pace and wit that this series has become known for, this action packed installment won yet another well deserved Hugo Award for Ms. Bujold. If you’ve made it this far into the series, come back to old friends and enjoy the ride.

Cordelia Naismith – now Lady Vorkosigan – takes up the lead role that had been laid down for the future based books about her son. While Miles’ quick thinking and preternatural skill of getting himself into one jam after another can be good reading, it’s a nice change of pace to read how Cordelia solves problems that she did not take part in creating. Her strength and resiliency grounds the story in a way only adults can.

The tale essentially becomes one of survival as civil war breaks out on Barrayar as the old guard of politicians try to keep the newly appointed Regent Aral Vorkosigan out of power following the Emporer’s death. Evading assassination attempts, capture, and betrayal, Cordelia and the faithful Sergeant Bothari must do what they can to remain free – and keep her unborn child Miles alive. The story builds quickly into an all out sprint that doesn’t end until all Barryar has been changed. Yet again, the Vorkosigans are at the middle of events that shake the galaxy. Just a normal tale for this family.

Few authors provide such easy and enjoyable reading as Lois Bujold. Even if you’re not a science fiction reader, these stories are about the inner and outer struggles of life. Plus they’re a whole lot of fun. Highly recommended!

Audible listeners: Grover Gardner is a great reader!

Another Great Vorkosigan Story!

A novel filled with humour, satire and just plain fun and adventure, ???Barrayar??? is the second instalment in the light hearted Vorkosigan saga.

Starting where ???Shards of Honor??? left us, this book follows Cordelia as she becomes Lady Vorkosigan. To her surprise her ???retired??? husband, Aral Vorkosigan is appointed Lord Regent of Barrayar, the backward planet she escaped to for love. Suddenly he is immerse with the politics of the planet all over again and she??? well she does very much the same thing she did in ???Shards of Honor.??? Furthermore she discovers that the reality of marriage and being in love are two very different things.

Although something of the general plot was very predictable, the way that Lois McMaster Bujold wrote this story, makes it really enjoyable. It is easy to listen to, not too over dramatic, plays with absurdities and doesn???t try to be too philosophical, while sharing some grandmotherly advice. I think this might be the reason that I???ve been hooked.

Again Grover Gardner is the narrator. He continues with a good solid performance. I never opted out.

At the end of this novel the stage is set, you will have met Miles Vorkosigan, the actual hero of the rest of the novels??? the stage is set. While not so Indiana Jones-like as the first adventure, it still reminds me of an action novel ??? maybe this novel is a bit more Mr. Bean-like.

Character developed, sociopolitical commentary, dark humor and sharp wit combined with Gardner’s voice? I can’t believe it took me 4 reads to leave a review. Every book in this series is inspired. Every single one.
