Publisher's summary

First published in 2012 as Occupy Space, Grady’s debut science-fiction novella inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, about a group of amateur astronauts who lead a rescue mission to space.

Walter Reddie is a washed-up former astronaut who takes it upon himself to build a rocket ship to rescue his cousin, who is stuck on the International Space Station after a mission gone wrong. If America won’t rescue its astronauts, Walter will do it himself.

Violating numerous laws, common sense, logic, and reason, Walter Reddie becomes a lightning rod for people who aren’t ready to lay down and die just yet. His "redneck NASA" becomes the promised land for losers, drifters, rocket junkies, pyromaniacs, misfits, dreamers, science nerds, and astro-hippies who still believe that the future of America is in space. But chances are they’ll blow themselves up, get arrested, or kill each other before they ever get into low Earth orbit.

Fun story with terrific narration!

This is the first work by Grady Hendrix I’ve read or listened too and I enjoyed it. The story starts a bit slow (my understanding is it’s a reissue of an earlier work), but I was drawn in. The narration by Ezra Buzzington elevated things for me quite a bit and made for an enjoyable experience overall.

What a performance!

This reading was amazing 👏. Grady Hendrix has never disappointed me with his entertaining dialog and good writing. The narrator played this like a fiddle. I could not stop listening for 3.75 hrs.

Perfect short story from Grady Hendrix. You can almost taste the Southern grit in these characters!

OMG. BWHAHAHA. YES!

If you've been thinking about reading this book... DO IT! Having grown up in the South... it's the most relatable thing I've ever listened to in my life. If you've read the back blurb... yes. It's EXACTLY that. And it's so much more. Read it. Read it now! 5 stars. You need Space Jesus in your life.

Early Hendrix

It's interesting reading (or listening to) the earlier works from Hendrix like this and 'Satan Loves You', because while they're still good books, you can definitely see how he's grown as a writer and storyteller. I really enjoyed this re-issue of Occupy Space.

Hank Hill trades propane for rocket fuel

I did not honestly think that I would be as entertained by a story that is essentially King of the Hill meets The Martian

But I was and I recommend it whole heartedly
