Editorial Reviews

This psychological suspense thriller in the tradition of Silence of the Lambs will have listeners loath to hit the pause button. Bad Karma follows psychopath Agnes Hatcher, institutionalized at Darden State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. When Agnes’ psychiatrist decides to take a vacation, she flies into a jealous rage, escapes from the hospital, and traces the erstwhile shrink - her one true love - to a remote California island. Performer Elizabeth Thompson delivers a roiling portrait of Agnes’ psychotic obsessions. Thompson’s adroit pacing lends authenticity to the unhinged heroine’s twisted mindset, as dour, depressive, psychosexual deliberations are punctured by ferocious flashes of violent mania, propelling this protagonist toward a cruel and captivating climax.

Don't waste your time...

I found this book to be just plain silly. A woman in a psych hospital for the criminally insane is soooo dangerous the staff keep a cloth over her face. Since her crazy eyes freak them out the material covers her eyes as well. When she escapes no one knows what she looks like because they've kept her like that for 10 YEARS....
Need I say more?
I don't recommend this book.

Gross

Yuck. That is that is pretty much all I can think of to say. Unless you are really into mayhem, gore, and the horrible things people can do to one another, I cannot recommend this book. It turned my stomach.

not worth it

i was really hoping this would be a better story. the beginning started out great but by the middle everything was so predictable and the ending was just plain weird. Definitely not worth the credit!

Meh.

I dislike one of the protagonists to a really strong degree that is making it difficult for me to finish the book. It would have been a better story for me if the wife had been more likeable. Also, *why* do so many narrators pronounce "forward" as "foe-ward" instead of "for-ward"? Picky, I know, lol. Overall this one was better than listening to nothing, but still just a little disappointing.

Weird book!

I listened to the audible version of Bad Karma. It started out odd and kept getting odder. It lost contact with reality and me about 1/3 of the way into the book! I listened to the whole thing but it became a waste of time. The narrator was good but not the book!

Family love,Narcissistic horror, a supernatural plot with twists and turns

Douglas Clegg is one of my favorite scary, scary, authors. True to form, he fascinates you with scenes from an old psychiatric hospital. Sociopaths bar none, tainted by terror in their early childhood development, he weaves a the story of childhood monsters fulfilling their destinies through brutality and bad karma. You can almost hear the nurses in their white uniforms, walking down the long corridors at night, shoes squeaking, with the clinking of keys rattling at their side as they make their rounds watching over their monstrous charges. Our protagonist is a special person bound by love for his family but cursed by His legitimate concern for the patients entrusted to his care. A few patients are so tainted by misery and abject horror they no longer have the capacity for any redeeming qualities. They walk amongst us as monsters.

I was a little nervous

I was a little nervous that this story was going to be too graphic. but it was no worse then say, Criminal Minds. good narrative with very few stand out mistakes. I would get another book by this author.

OMG

What a brilliant book. I am so glad you get free books occasionally, because I probably wouldn't have come across this authour. I couldn't stop listening to it. I am going to get the next book in the series, and I don't mind paying for it, it will be worth every penny, even if it's only half as good as this one. Get this book, I promise you, you won't be disappointed.
