Story
Ash Thomas and his gameplay with other men is vicious, cruel. Better to f--k someone over than be the one who’s on the floor, f--ked up, right? But his latest cruelties are about to catch the eye of the Wraith, someone who’s been brought up to play professionally in the shadows. Life lessons never did come easy, especially when they’re about to walk in off the darkened streets, bringing a hangman with bloodied footprints in its wake.

Carrying a tattoo on your skin no longer just comes with a risk of infection. Get the composition right, and you have the latest mind-control drug on the market. It’s the sex-traders’ dream...or worst nightmare, depending on the concentrated dose of the ink and just who’s wearing it. You think you know me. That's the way I want it. Making you feel like we know each other - like we could go grab a beer sometime - is part of my job. Maybe the most vital part. It doesn't hurt that I'm easy on the eyes, single at 35, and born richer than sin. My aesthetic matters much more than it should, but all the better for my worthy cause. And it's a worthy cause. I've made an art out of making you feel good, and my influence makes you want to be good. Good like me. You think you know me, but you don't. Everyone has secrets. Mine could cost me everything.

Ever hear the story about the bodyguard who falls for the rock star? Yeah, it never ends well. Each day I remind myself that it's my job to protect Stone. And nowhere in the job description does it say I should lust after the charismatic, charming man. Especially since we're opposites. But every night I spend with him the dangerous, off-limits attraction grows more intense. Until one night in a limo when we combust. One time only will have to be enough. One scorching, forbidden night. Because the mistakes from the past are chasing me. And if I give in again, I'll lose everything.

In my defense, I was left alone with a bottle of single-malt and a lifelong penchant for protecting my baby sister. Still, that's no excuse to send 10 drunk-texts on why her hasty marriage would be a mistake. If only I had just texted my sister. But nope. I accidentally sent the message to her, her groom, and his super hot wingman. I also used the phrase “super hot wingman”, so I’d like to die now.

Every bartender should follow one simple rule - don't go home with the customers. That’s been easy for me to stick to, until the night a cocky, confident, and sinfully charming hockey star walks into my bar. This sexy athlete is too hard to resist, especially when he makes it clear how much he wants the “sarcastic, witty, hot AF” guy behind the bar - also known as me. It started out as a little fun. When there was a man in my building on a hookup app, why not message him? Only we didn’t meet. We just texted - one night after the other, after the other. GoodWithHisHands was the perfect escape from my life, where pressure was always on my shoulders: my father’s expectations, the worry about my sister, Maddy, getting sick again, and her ex-husband, Ryder Lynwood, suddenly back and volunteering at the same hospital as me. I like talking to him, the same way I enjoy chatting with GoodWithHisHands. They weren’t supposed to be the same person.

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Publisher's Summary
“Those five months away. Where were you, mukka?” (Jack Harrison)
In the aftermath of Jack Harrison’s release from the psychiatric unit, Gray Raoul’s innate “born this bastard way” instinct is to brutally repay the one responsible for financing Jack and Jan’s torturous psychological reconditioning. But that person is a professional player in their own right, one who knows exactly how to manipulate everyone in Gray’s life. To help negotiate this delicate situation, Gray seeks to contract Trace and his ex-Diadem Dom, Gabriel Hunter. But the more Gray seems to regain control, the clearer it becomes that there’s something not quite right about Jan Richards.
As Jan’s world unravels, taking Jack and Gray with it and bringing out one particular deadly player, Gray’s left with one last defence: Break Jack down in order to partner up with Martin. But once freed, Martin’s out for retribution of his own, and he wants to get downright personal with Gray.
Complete trust between Master, sub, and lover, between Gray, Jack, and Jan - is about to be tested to the absolute limit.

COMPLICATED AND WORTH IT
Deep, dark, twisted, suspense, this book has it all. Hard at times to push through because its written with so much talent its so real you feel a little lost. The journey is captivating. Dan Calley rocked the narration. Im definitely a fan! Being a U.S. listener it was refreshing to submerge myself into a British author and narrator. It kept me on my toes with accent and dialogue!

Love the series, like the book
The Don't series and Dan Calley's performance of it are terrific. This book--Backlash--was less engrossing than the previous books, perhaps because two of the three main characters are seriously damaged and in a kind of limbo until Gray, who is himself damaged, figures out who financed events in the previous series. There's a lot of confused thinking in this book, and that's interesting psychologically, but not as suspenseful, and it lacks the occasional humor that livened up the previous books. Still, I'm glad I read it and after a break for some lighter fare, I'll return to the series.
The narration is great as always except--I almost feel bad mentioning it, but--the American accents are just plain bad. It's like he took a few of the characteristics of regional dialect and emphasized them while not getting the underlying rhythms and cadences. I almost had to stop listening when Trace and the other Americans showed up.

there's a lot going on
Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
Story comment: the characters in this series are well developed (all-be-it both physically and psychologiclaly scarred), there is a lot going on and pieces are starting to fall into place, it's just another day in the heart-wrenching, emotional rollercoaster that is this series.
Narrator comment: I enjoyed Dan Calley's narration and think he's done a good job narrating Backlash. I had no problem distinguishing characters and the rhythm, inflections and intonations all worked to bring the book to life.

Dark and twisty
Just when you think the twists and turns can't get more shocking, Just when you think you are getting a conclusion perhaps a finally well deserved happily ever after or at least for now...DON'T. Sorry, I just couldn't resist that.
But this should tell you enough. Gray is trying to find out who has financed the events in the previous books that have left both Jack and Jan broken trying to mend., and we find that Jan has his own secrets and that his life in a way set a lot of this mess inadvertently in motion. and if you thought the last was the m biggest shock you were gonna get and it couldn't get much twisty... Don't!
I listened to the series on audio and I highly suggest you do too. Dan Calley gives the characters such depth, so much emotion and the accents just bring that special, secret, dark feel to the story... so on the Audio If you can...DO!

great book
I had such a good time with this guys. I love Gray so much. He is such an intriguing character and getting a little bit more of his history was great. I love the interactions between all of the characters. I liked them all but Gray is the one who got my heart.
Even with how good the story was, I had a few low moments, mostly because of the slow pace and some very few moments when I didn’t felt the strong connection I always get from every one of the characters. Those were very few occasion and most of the time, I had a great time with the book.
I alternate the ebook and the audiobook. I love the narration. The voices given to Gray, Jack and Jan are so perfect. I was so excited to see how Trace, Gabe and Darrek would make themselves noticed since there are already so much characters but it worked perfectly. I Really liked the book as well as the narration.

Again this series keeps getting better, more roller coasters and heartache but so well written, you just can’t put these book down.
Performance wise, Dan Calley has had a tough job portraying all that goes on with these men and he do it wonderfully well.
The story line is hard, but if your looking for something other than the usual HEA you will not be disappointed.

Keeps getting better and better
I’m always left with a serious book hangover when I finish one of Jack L. Pike’s books and it’s even more acute with the audiobook. I love the fast paced knife edge world Jack(Martin) Jan and Grey inhabit. There is so much to this book I feel like I need to listen to it again just to do it justice. It doesn’t hurt that I get to listen to Dan Calley’s lovely voice again either. This book is not only about finding out who was behind the attack on Jack and Jan but also about them being on the road to healing, finding each other again. Not easy especially if written by Jack L. Pyke. I love the hard fought for road in a story and this road is spiked.
Dan Calley is excellent as always and knows how to pitch it just right to keep me on the edge of my seat.

Just...amazing
This book has been an emotional rollercoaster. I so want these men to be happy and able to pull together. Poor Jan has always seemed to be a bit distant from the other two because of their shared history, and he's been coping with too much on his own. At about 30% in, I literally felt like nothing could ever be resolved satisfactorily for them...just seeing problems piling on top of more problems...and I almost gave up.
Well...I am so glad I didn't. Suddenly, everything started to come right for me (because I am important too!) and the remaining 70% rushed past. I felt hopeful once again. What wonderful writing to wreak all these emotions from me and bring some light into all that darkness. (The 3 characters from Lynn Kelling's books are seamlessly integrated too.)
Once again, Dan Calley proves to be excellent in his many roles. The 3 US voices are confidently spoken and all are very different. When I read a chapter rather than listen, I hear Jack's voice clearly in my head. Amazing!
