On 12 September 1973, 32-year-old Wendy Sewell walked into Bakewell Cemetery to meet a man. Minutes later, she was the victim of a savage attack that would become one of Britain's most controversial murder cases.

Within hours, 17-year-old cemetery groundsman Stephen Downing had been detained. Convicted of Wendy's murder in 1974, he spent 27 years behind bars before his conviction was dramatically quashed by the Court of Appeal.

But the case didn't end there.

Anonymous letters, forgotten witnesses, disputed forensic evidence and claims that Wendy was seen alive with another man after Downing had left the cemetery have continued to fuel debate for decades.
