AN OLD FOE IS CHARGED WITH MURDER.

Criminal Defense Attorney Mitch Turner is outside the county building when his nemesis, Frank Ward, is arrested and charged with murder. When their eyes meet as the cops parade Ward to the police car, Mitch knows Ward will call him, and he is conflicted. Curiosity compels him to meet with Ward, and he can’t stand idly by after hearing Ward’s chilling recollection of the events that led to his arrest. Ward might be a reckless prosecutor, but a murderer? Mitch doesn’t think so.

A SIMPLE CASE BECOMES COMPLEX.

Assistant State’s Attorney Ainsley Karsten was discovered stabbed in the basement of the county building, and Frank Ward was found unconscious in the same room. The evidence is convincing. But the deeper Mitch digs, the more he finds questions he can’t answer. Questions that take him to a place he’s hesitant to go.

A NEW FOE WILLING TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN.

On top of that, the independent prosecuting attorney Pace Brooks is determined to convict Ward at all costs, seeing it as a steppingstone to political office. The deck is stacked against Mitch as he struggles against this determined and seasoned attorney, who is looking to take advantage of every opportunity, even at the cost of truth and justice.

Can Mitch Turner keep his wits about him in the game of oneupmanship and see that the truth prevails?

First of all, I really enjoyed the plot and the twist at the end. I legitimately didn't see it coming.

Secondly, Eric Dove is fantastic. Great job as usual.

Now for the negatives.....I have grown very tired of hearing every single thought Mitch has in detail. a lot of it I consider fluff and doesn't move the story along. Every Mitch Turner book is like this and I have finally gotten to the point where I can't take it anymore. if there are any more books to follow, I won't be reading them. Also, I found this book to be needlessly convoluted with more characters than necessary, some of who never actually make an actual appearance in the book. Quite frankly, I felt like I would have needed a whiteboard to keep up with all the details about all the characters. I gave up trying to keep up with them all and by the end of the book I felt like we could have had the same conclusion with a lot fewer characters. It says something that I forgot about many of the characters and what their role was and I still fully understood the ending. What does that tell you? I think the book as a whole could have been 25% shorter and had the same amazing finale.

I want to emphasize that the core plot was actually very, very good. You just have to wade through a lot of fluff to get to it. I typically don't mind slow development and details. In this book they just seemed super excessive.

Fantastic plot, but.....
