engaging & entertaining

I really enjoyed the third installment of the widows' story. The character and relationship development were well done.

Missing some sparkle

I love the Widows series. I was lucky enough to discover it when both the first two books were already released so there was no wait time. I was ecstatic to discover this third installment when it came out to listen to the further adventures of my favorite foursome.

It was off to a strong start and slowly started to fizzle out. I got about halfway in and realized there had been no narration from Meredith's point of view and I was sorely missing her funny sarcastic tone and point of view especially since the story revolved around her whereabouts and the other widows looking for her. I saw all the same voice narrators listed and could not figure out what was going on. Looking again at the details I see one of the original four authors Layne Fargo was missing on the list. I can only assume she was the creator behind Meredith's point of view and her absence lead to an absence of Meredith as well and it took some of the sparkle out of the story for me. The vague mention of her unhappiness with her life and her mysterious activities were not in line with the character as she was originally portrayed. Neither is the Stockholm Syndrome. After everything Meredith has been through she would definitely not fall in love so fast and act so unguarded. Her voice narrator was also reduced to a few lines at the end from an unnamed character which is a great disservice to her talents and for the audience.

The addition of a "new" widow was a great concept but not well executed. The Irish storyline was complicated and depressing and I did not find her to be very likable. Extra villains introduced mid way through who were not fully fleshed out did not improve the story and chaos and confusion began. I started checking how much longer was left as things got more hectic and outrageous which is never a good sign when I am listening to a book.

I love Krystle and was happy her spirit was intact and she added much needed humor to the story while it was dragging. Camille was always my favorite and its nice to know she is settled and happy in her new relationship but you never get to see much of it due to the wild plot line that starts immediately and never takes a break. Its not really feasible the entire story took place in 1-2 days nobody ever ate or got any sleep and then towards the end it was conveniently Halloween night where nothing was mentioned before that had ever indicated it was imminent. And lastly Justine always get stuck with the more boring mundane parts of the story and I feel bad she never gets any peace to be happy and settled with her son. The story also was also lacking missing some of its great side characters like Rome that really keep it fun and interesting.

Overall I am happy to have another story with the Widows but I was unhappy with the flow of it and very unhappy at the end. Too much chaos and it was rushed while feeling snail slow at the same time. I had to stop myself several times from Googling what happens to finally know and get it over with. Trying not to have spoilers I think a few choices need to be reversed with the ending and we need to pick back up with ALL the original authors, narrators and all the original FUN that went into our girls and their world in Providence Rhode Island in the 80s.
