Worthless background for MC

The fact that Leo's background as a local reporter should of been used for more than the writer saying "he tells good stories"
He should of had far more experience handling people, in both getting a rise out of others or deescalating situations. He should be atleast better at asking questions to gather information, but he has the social skills of spoiled teen despite his age.
I can't even blame this on his loss of humanity, as to do so the writer needs to atleast acknowledge his newfound fault in that regard, but even with all the introspection Leo does, not once does his lacking skill in these things get mentioned. Hell, he even keeps his ability to tell good stories perfectly well! So its clearly not about his evolution, but because the author wanted a stupid, blind, and socially inept character to fall into obvious social problems.
Also, the companion gained in the latter half of the book felt so forced in how they exist/are gained. I know the author wanted to correct the mistake of giving Leo people who could be too helpful with information, but just saying "and this is how that happened" felt terrible.

As for the narrator:
Almost no-one sounds like they are from the UK.
Theyre either an Australian without the aussie vocabulary or irish(?), not counting the MC's terribly dry American accent with a few british vocab words thrown in. Mostly calling things "Wanker" or "Mate"

Not the worst narrator by far but it gets harder to overlook with the declining quality of writing. Maybe should of chosen someone who could preform the accents better. There are a TON of variations of the british accent, but just one would be good enough if the narrator can actually preform it.
