    This episode investigates the occult history of Halloween by following the evidence behind Samhain, All Hallows’ Eve, and the modern holiday. It begins with Irish folklore records collected by schoolchildren in nineteen thirty-seven and nineteen thirty-eight, then moves backward and forward through medieval Irish literature, Christian calendar history, Geoffrey Keating’s seventeenth-century account of a Samhain fire at Tlachtga, Robert Burns’s eighteenth-century poem Halloween, nineteenth-century scholarship by Sir John Rhys and James Frazer, and Ronald Hutton’s recent reassessment of the evidence. The public story often presents Halloween as one ancient Celtic rite: a New Year, a feast of the dead, a druidic ceremony, and sometimes a night of sacrifice. The surviving record supports a more careful account. Samhain was important in medieval Irish literature and later folklore preserved many seasonal customs, but medieval texts are not direct eyewitness records of pre-Christian ritual. All Saints’ and All Souls’ observances shaped the calendar, but the claim that the Church chose November first specifically to suppress Samhain remains unproven. There is no documented Samhain secret society, membership roll, or verified ancient Halloween order. The unresolved question is how far historical evidence can go before tradition becomes legend.

    In late nineteen-sixties and early nineteen-seventies Los Angeles, Jim Baker opened The Source, a health-food restaurant on Sunset Boulevard that became the financial engine and social doorway for a communal spiritual movement. Known to followers as Father Yod and later YaHoWha, Baker gathered roughly one hundred to one hundred fifty members into shared houses, meditation, vegetarian practice, music, labor, new names, and a family structure centered on his authority. Former member Isis Aquarian, one of his spiritual wives and the group’s designated documentarian, preserved photographs, films, recordings, scrapbooks, and teachings that now shape much of what can be known about the group. The Source Family was public, artistic, and beloved by some members, but it also raises serious questions about charismatic authority, gender, sexuality, age, children, dissent, money, and dependency. The community moved from a Los Feliz mansion to Nichols Canyon, then sold the restaurant and left for Hawaii in late nineteen seventy-four. In August nineteen seventy-five, Baker died after a hang-gliding crash, leaving members to decide whether a family built around one man could survive without him. The central unresolved question is not whether every member had the same experience. They did not. It is how a restaurant-based counterculture experiment could offer real belonging while concentrating so much power in one leader.
