Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth—or Minitrue as it is called in Newspeak—where he alters newspapers and reports to follow the arbitrary dictates of Big Brother’s propaganda. Beneath his outward conformity, however, Winston dreams of sharing his treasonable thoughts and breaking through the loneliness in which he lives.

Thus he takes his first dangerous steps, writing a diary of his doubts and then falling in love with a woman of the Party, the beautiful and brave Julia. They know their love is doomed, but Julia says, “They can make you say anything—anything—but they can’t make you believe it.”

But in Oceania, there is no possibility of solidarity, rebellion, or love—and the Party can reach anywhere.

First published in 1949, this disturbing novel that George Orwell wrote during a time of great social and political unrest centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of people and behaviors within society.

This classic of dystopian fiction contributed new words that became part of common English usage, including Big Brother, doublethink, newspeak, and thoughtcrime. The adjective "Orwellian" has come to mean government deception, surveillance, and misleading terminology.

A book about Gaslighting....lol

⚠️Semi-Spoiler Alert⚠️

No joke this whole book is one big Gaslighting story. And it being a older book I am gonna spoil a bit and say it is not, in my opinion, NOT a very happy ending....Unless of course you are on Big Brother's side. 👀 Poor Winston Smith....and Julia. Smh

There is like a 🌶 worth of what some would call spice. There are references and allusion to scenes. But not explicit nor do they last long in description. He does use profanity multiple times and makes lewd/offensive remarks that some today would be completely offended and say "this book must be banned" not matter the context or the fact that it is FICTION.

This world is wild and is scary to think about, though one can draw parallels to current times. Maybe Orwell is a Oracle of sorts. 🔮 I would hate to live in this, at the time of writing, futuristic world where they have new speak and words of the english language are being eradicated from the world...big brother is always watching you....and History is contantly being rewritten to the point that no one actually knows what is true. Maybe Orwell was just a little off on his dates for it to come to fruition. I mean we ARE banning books....🤷‍♀️ I did have a tough time focusing during some parts because it kind of reads like a text book at times.

Knowledge is Power

I liked this. I loved the reader’s voice, and the story overall. I’ve had the physical version for a while but being able to listen to the audiobook during my long work commute was so much better! George Orwell’s writing creates such a vivid picture of what’s happening throughout the story, would honestly read (listen to) again.

Thought police

I liked the book because it is a warning to free people everywhere. AI is a new threat that could be seen as big brother.

genuinely the best peace of written fiction of the past few centuries

the story, the world, the themes, what is not to love about this novel. truly amazing

it’s relevance

still to this day a world which would’ve seemed unimaginable to happen again after past atrocities is once again made true. the similarities really are unnerving. down with big brother.
