After waking in a shallow grave and clawing her way to freedom, Penelope Francis hunts for the rogue who stole her life and transformed her into a vampire. Despite being corrupted into a feared preternatural, she clings to her humanity and refuses to prey on innocents, instead slaking her thirst on other miscreant vampires.
In exchange for a chance at revenge, she joins forces with the charismatic master of the Lowrance brood, a choice that may spell the salvation—or destruction—of humanity as she knows it.

The readers in this series are just awful

but holy hell the author uses the word "brood" 3,789 times; "bride" 442 times, and "blood" 1,457 times.
I mean come on. we get it. They're vampires that live in a group called a brood. The women live separately and don't mix well.
The author seems to have set this book up as the beginning of an EXTREMELY long series. but there is only a second book and it's been released for over 2 years now. there are a lot of side plots that would make their own books, but it leaves a lot of things open at the end of this one.
and honestly there's so little movements and action in this book that it makes you really want to read the second one in order to find the action. but I will warn you, do not listen this book if you're trying to stay awake. it's good, but there's just talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk *big breath in* talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. there's a few minutes of action at the beginning and it makes you think 'wow this is going to be a fun-filled adventure'. then it's like 5 hours of just slooooow story building.
about 3/4 of the way through there's about 10 more minutes of action. then it just kind of ends after about 45 minutes of no more action.
Come on there's not even any flirting. No great sex scene. Nothing.
I literally fell asleep three or four times trying to listen to it. then I had to go back and find the last place that I remember hearing it and start it over again.
This was on the "free with membership" list, and I did pay close to $6 for the second book. I really want to see where it's going. but I will not be spending any more money on future books if the second one does not produce at least some sort of adventure. it's like the author tried to start a great story, and she knew where she wanted to go, but she couldn't figure out how to get it there. So she just ended it. I'm hoping she got her mind put together and organized and put it in the second book. Now I'm off to find out.
oh and there are quite a few moments in the story where the narrator is clearly chewing gum or eating or picking her teeth? I'm not really sure, but she's doing something with her mouth besides narrating.
slowest moving arc ever

This narrator isn’t the best but at least she doesn’t grate on my nerves nor gives me headaches so that’s a plus. The issue is this book is BORING. All the characters are so bland.
I’m 68% and literally nothing happened yet. It’s just going thru the boring life of a 31 year old lawyer. Even the banter was boomer humor. The MMC is the stereotypical British old school uptight vampire. Even the flirting was cringy.
Even now I can’t begin to tell you what’s going on because I literally tune it out. Is this one of those “over 40” books the market is saturated with? I find those books boring too. I don’t get how authors can’t find a balance between a 18 year old MarySue and a 40 year MarySue. Lol what is going on???
