“My name is Buckhunter Dornley, and I am dead.”

This isn’t your average fairy tale, and Sir Buckhunter Dornley isn’t your average knight. He’ll tell you that himself. Winning tournaments, fighting cyclopes, and slaying dragons? All in a day’s work for the mightiest knight in the empire, but that knight is about to meet his match in Mercy, the charming and outrageous princess of Merris. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and Buck falls hard. What he doesn’t know is Mercy lives under an ancient, terrible curse. When he finds out, Buck swears he’ll do anything to break it.

There’s just one little problem.

He’s dead.

For there to be any chance of happily ever after, the knight determined to rescue the princess may need the princess to rescue him too.

A fairy tale fantasy perfect for those who love traditional fairy tales with a twist.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this book, as the narrator has a rich, deep tone to his voice which adds so much to the story. The story flows smoothly and it is easy to imagine being there. Great job!

Great performance by Marcus in this sweet, romantic fairytale. A quick read, but well worth it for those who want a charming take on the classic knight-rescues-the-princess theme, but leaves you wondering who really rescued who.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a nice frame story and it was refreshing that I couldn't guess exactly what happens, as I am one of *those people* who constantly tries to figure out the plot. Easy listening. I regularly follow Marcus' voice acting and narrarion. I really enjoyed the dragon's voice. I am pretty familiar with their voice and that was a totally new, deep facet I hadn't heard before. They really make you feel like you aren't just listening to someone read. Sometimes I forget that I'm not listen to a full cast recording.

This was a fast-paced fairytale that I really enjoyed listening to while puttering around my house. Now, to add it to my ever-growing list of favorites!

Enjoyable!

This was a fast-paced, quick listen, but thoroughly entertaining nonetheless. I admit, I chose to listen to the book because of the whole zombie thing. The idea of the handsome, hero knight as an undead corpse struck me as potentially hilarious, and I wanted to see how the story went.
For the most part, it's the typical fairy tale, framed within an outer story. There's magic, a doomed princess, the heroic knight, quests, mysterious women with unhelpful prophecies, and, of course, a dragon nemesis. Most importantly, true love conquers all — even death!
The stories weave together nicely, and I enjoyed seeing how the whole knight turned zombie situation occurred.
Marcus Rothenberg was the perfect voice for the flawed knight who initially thought too highly of himself.

The heroic knight... zombie?

This medieval fantasy romance was not what I was expecting in the best of ways! It was an intriguing story that I highly recommend! I grew to love the arrogant, broody, conceited, and very grumpy knight that eventually came to his senses all thanks to a chattery, cheerful, pretty, sassy, and very sweet princess. The world building was historical and whimsical, with beautiful descriptions. The narrator spoke clearly, I loved their robust voice for the knight, the subtle change from narration to speaking as the main character, and their inflections with all the characters.
The story starts with a glimpse of the present, where an archaeologist discovers a magical book. One that tells the tale of Sir Buckhunter Dornley, a travelling knight that went on adventures, was a champion in every tournament, and according to the first sentence dead. He tells his story, of how Princess Mercy softened his heart, and how he won hers. How she thought killing him would save him, not knowing that she didn't have all the knowledge to bring him back. Instead, he's somewhere in between a slowly rotting corpse and the man that's sure he can save her from her horrible fate.
Will they discover the Words of Life that need to be spoken over him? Will they be able to save each other in time?
While I owned the ebook, I did receive a free copy of the audiobook with no expectation of a review. All opinions are my own.
