Today on The Stacks, we’re joined by talented multi-hyphenate Phoebe Robinson. Phoebe is a stand-up comedian; the bestselling author of You Can’t Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain, Everything’s Trash, But It’s Okay, and Please Don't Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes; the founder and publisher of Tiny Reparations Books; and the co-creator and former co-host of the hit podcast 2 Dope Queens, among many other things. In this episode, we get into her journey to becoming a book publisher, how Tiny Reparations resists internet book trends, and her favorite part of her multi-hyphenate life.

Our book club pick for November is Famesick by Lena Dunham. We will be discussing the book with Phoebe Robinson on Wednesday, November 25.

It’s The Stacks Book Club Day, and we’re once again joined by DEI consultant, friend of the pod, and the reader behind Literary Intersections, Jess Lee, to chat about our October pick, Last Chance Live! by Helena Haywoode Henry. This dystopian novel follows Eternity Price, an 18-year-old death-row inmate competing for freedom on America’s most popular reality TV show. Today, Jess and I share everything we liked—and didn’t like—about the book, the timeliness of the subject, and the reality TV of it all.

There are spoilers in this episode.

Listen to the end of the episode to find out what our November book club pick will be!

On today’s bonus episode, we’re joined by writer, editor, and voice actor Tajja Isen to talk about the decline in nonfiction. Tajja wrote the recent piece, “Nonfiction Is Struggling. Publishers Are Making It Worse,” for The Walrus about why the publishing industry might be to blame for the downturn in nonfiction sales. We go into this more deeply in this episode, exploring all the reasons why we’re seeing a shift in the nonfiction publishing landscape, from memoirs to private equity and beyond.
