On a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire's enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name "The Sword of Kaigen".

Born into Kusanagi's legendary Matsuda family, f14-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: To master his family's fighting techniques and defend his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen's alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies.

Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface.

When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores?

A tale about heroes, parenthood, life paths and love.

This book follows two characters: <b>Mamoru</b>, first born of four boys in the Matsuda family, the greatest warrior family in Takayubi; and his mother, <b>Misaki</b>, a trained warrior raised to be a housewife, married to aloof Matsuda Takeru.

I believe I’ve never cried this much over a book, my husband was actually worried about me. I would recommend you read it whilst in a stable state of mind, as this book addresses heavy topics. I mean, after all, it IS a war story.

<b>Trigger warning</b> (slight spoilers ahead): <spoiler>racism, misogyny, blood, death, grief, miscarriage, sexual abuse, violence, severed limbs, suicide, dead children, rape.</spoiler>

Characters are well-written, the action scenes are engrossing, and the world-building fascinating.

A book full of wisdom.

Heartbreaking war story

I read this book when it first came out but saw it was on audible and wanted to listen to it once again. I was not disappointed. First this is a fantastic story, M. L. Wang wrote this story while going through a dark time and you can feel that in parts of the story but there is so much more. You might want to check out her website where she has a list of terms to help you better understand some of the phases. Andrew Tell is a fantastic voice actor and gives to story a whole new level plus I now know the some of the names I made a mistake with how to say the names. This is a must read.

Amazing Story! A Must Read!

The book seems to be have written as a starter of a much larger multi-book series. Plotlines, characters and backgrounds are put into place and never expanded upon.

The writer also devotes significant time (half the book) exploring and following a character only to stop.

Recently watch a video on the differences between eastern and western thinking and this book lines up very well with that. Eastern is about the journey, Western is about the destination. This book is definitely journey driven.

My title says the keyword is story, and it is a good story that leaves many unanswered questions.

I will say, this a great beginning to a larger, yet unfinished story, in my opinion.

Keyword is Story

As multiple People have allrwasy stated, this feels like the future of fantasy storytelling. Ml Wang is not afraid of taking risks and does so with confidence. She takes choices with the narrative that most author never do, at least not with western fantasy books. The world feels expansive and diverse, yet only takes place in a single Mountain Village. Wang perfectly captures the feeling of isolation and inslular society, and deftly sprinkles tdbits about the world around it. Not gonna spoil anything else, this story simply has to be experienced.

An absolutely knockout for a self published novel

Overall a great story. Lots of character depth, the action is good, the world building is interesting,

The narrator could have been better prepared for the non english words, he was also fairly slow I ended up speeding the performance to 1.30x.

Everything changed when the air? nation attacked
