The Last of the Giants: How Christ Came to the Lumberjacks

In its early years, Duluth was a gold mine for lumber barons. Men were employed as lumberjacks and worked like beasts, only to be tossed aside like used equipment when no longer needed. The grand forests were raped for their prime timber, the balance burned wastefully. The men were coarse and hard, but they had to be to survive. More than any other people that ever lived in our land, these old-time lumberjacks could truthfully say, "No man cared for my soul."

That is, until God sent three men to the great Northwoods of our country - Frank Higgins, John Sornberger, and Al Channer. These men blazed new trails of the Spirit and founded an empire for God. They reached a sector of humanity for which no spiritual work had ever been done before, storming the Northwoods with a consuming passion for Christ. And with that passion, they also brought a heart as big as all outdoors, a love for men that burned like a flame, and a desperate desire to see these men saved.

The story itself was amazing

I liked everything about it one of the most amazing books I’ve ever heard it was very nice

My five children and I listened to this book on every car ride we took for the last few weeks.
It is a gripping story of the amazing grace of God. The world of the lumberjacks is such an interesting a little known piece of history. It was a super great and inspiring story! Highly recommended!

Penetrating insight into Christianity in the Northwoods

This was my first acquaintance with the evangelism and characters of the American Northwoods. Initially, I was frustrated with the lengthy exposé of the wicked lives of the first two evangelists. The backdrop of their lives, however, made for a beautiful setting and insight into the conversion, lives and ministries of those men. The history, storytelling and work of God among the lumberjacks was well polished and most astounding. An excellent and edifying read.

Faith, History, & Masculine Brotherly Love

Amazing book describing historic times, the great need for God’s love, the powerful transformation of the gospel, and the truly masculine way to live and witness. So many great themes covered in this book. Captivating story and valuable insights.

As someone who grew up catechized, I’ve been hesitant about laymen being ordained as a pastor or sending them as missionaries, but this has encouraged me in supporting those who are uniquely aligned to do missionary/evangelistic work. Caution should be used, of course, but God’s plan can work outside of man’s desired plan.

This is a “must listen to” book from 1948 that I could not wait to finish. Within 24 hours of starting it, I finished it. I’m sure I will revisit it in the future.
