#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Soak up the sun—and the intrigue—with the first novel in John Grisham’s beloved Camino series.

“A happy lark [that] provides the pleasure of a leisurely jaunt periodically jolted into high gear, just for the fun and speed of it.”—The New York Times Book Review

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars.

Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts.

Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Bruce Cable’s circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets.

But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can deliver it.

January Lavoy was an adequate narrator for this novel, pleasant voice for a pleasant book. I listened to it pretty much straight though so it held my interest but somehow I was left unsatisfied and I'm really not sure why.

Summer read

John Grisham totally changed his writing content and style in his new book. The story opened with the robbery of five manuscripts of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels from a high-security vault at Princeton University. The manuscripts are valued at twenty-five million dollars. The FBI’s Rare Asset Recovery Unit made a couple of arrests and then the investigation stalled. A rare asset retrieval company recruited Mercer Mann, a struggling writer, to go in as a mole to their prime suspects, Bruce Kable’s, new and rare bookstore on Camino Island.

The book is well written and the suspense builds throughout the story. The story is more of a cat-and-mouse type of tale. I am impressed with how Grisham ties his various plot threads together. This book is about writing, independent publishing, independent bookstores and the theft of rare books. How could I, an avid reader, not like the book.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is almost nine hours long. January LaVoy does a good job narrating the book. LaVoy is a well-known actress and audiobook narrator.

I'm a huge Grisham fan and have only had one listen (novel) that I didn't love. Besides great characters, awesome pacing, a wonderful reader, and a absorbing story... like all his books I learned a lot too particularly about book collecting. Don't miss this one.
