A riveting thriller of corporate intrigue and cutthroat competition between American and Japanese business interests.

On the forty-fifth floor of the Nakamoto tower in downtown Los Angeles - the new American headquarters of the immense Japanese conglomerate - a grand opening celebration is in full swing.

On the forty-sixth floor, in an empty conference room, the corpse of a beautiful young woman is discovered.

The investigation immediately becomes a headlong chase through a twisting maze of industrial intrigue, a no-holds-barred conflict in which control of a vital American technology is the fiercely coveted prize - and in which the Japanese saying "business is war" takes on a terrifying reality.

Rising Sun was made into a film, starring Sean Connery.

Very preachy and lots of pontification about the relationship of japan and the us- got tired listening to it all

Too much lecturing

A pretty good storyline overall even though the story contains pretty graphic details of a sexual murder and the F bombs are frequent, which I wish I would have known ahead of time.

Makes Me Think About Japanese & US Relationship

Book was well narrated. Interesting to hear it again after nearly 30 years have passed.

If you love Chrichton, you should read this. Story wise it is mostly a straight noir--if you know the genre the plot won't be too surprising (I guessed all the plot reveals). It's both fun to see him do this genre because he brings his trademark social-technological depth to it, but that also makes it frustrating. It often feels like he shoehorns his science/technology fetish into someone else's story. It also feels a little dated as of 2022 with the backdrop of "Japan taking over the US economy." Nevertheless, really enjoyable if you like Chrichton, you really like video tape technology, or just a good buddy cop story.

If Jurassic Park as a noir
