Publisher's summary

Legends aren't born. They're made.

Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary traveling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people.

First Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who has vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.

Now Dug's on the wrong side of the thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one small child, and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that might get them all killed....

Joe Ambercrombie style

Any additional comments?

If you like Joe Ambercrombie style work - great characters, rough and raw, bad language, but always great twists with a very good narrator - you'll like this book. :-)

Gritty, Cannibalism included

This story is set in Roman times and is full of action and war. There is good character development and slow parts in the story are few in between. The narrator Sean Barrett was the main factor in my continuing this story, although I found it a bit too disturbing to be able to finish the book.

Fantastic!!

I was so upset that I've read every one of Bernard Cornwells books pre 10ad & that is my biggest interest cutoff time period. This work is fictional but woven together beautifully to shed light on the mysterious British Iron Age. Fantastic read & onto book 2. Well written & it captures all the essence & passion of the time periods when everyone seemed to be so much more than they are now

the audio performance is excellent and the story is excellent. whenever you feel like there is a full moment there is a new challenge to take on.

the heros in the book are distinct and I felt myself cheering for the success

Simply amazing.

Mr. Watson has left me utterly speechless. This book is an absolute hidden gem and Mr. Watson is now one of my favorite authors. Right alongside with Bernard Cronwell. This was a true joy to listen to.
