Bryson brings his unique brand of humour to travel writing as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on his wallet and heads for Europe. Travelling with Stephen Katz—also his wonderful sidekick in A Walk in the Woods—he wanders from Hammerfest in the far north, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia. As he makes his way round this incredibly varied continent, he retraces his travels as a student twenty years before with caustic hilarity. “Bryson is first and foremost a storyteller—and a supremely comic and original one at that.”
Winnipeg Free Press

"A breezy and entertaining account of what it is like to be utterly at sea in a continent most of his readers will regard as familiar."
―Independent on Sunday

"Hugely funny (not snigger-snigger funny, but great-big-belly-laugh-till-you-cry funny)."
―Daily Telegraph

"Undoubtedly the most enjoyable travel book of the year."
―Time Out

"This is the travel book that every Inter-Rail vagrant would love to write; the Animal House of the genre."

not a great book. talking about traveling through Europe with Katz. basically it is a poor man's walk in the woods, European style. only slightly better than watching your uncle Fred's vacation movies on 8 mm.

this and the thunderbolt kid, are Bryson's worst

I liked his colorful descriptions and enjoyed his adventures all over Europe. The narration could have been better.

Love love love Bryson’s way with words and humor. He gives such interesting descriptions of European towns and makes me laugh out loud as I listen to his stories about his struggles and delights as he travels.

I did not care for the reader’s voice—it did not match my idea of how Bryson would sound. The reader was too British-sounding. It almost made me stop listening.

Wonderful Fun
