New York Times bestseller Julia Spencer-Fleming returns to her beloved Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne mystery series

It’s Christmas time in Millers Kill, and Reverend Clare Fergusson and her husband Russ van Alstyne - newly resigned from his position as chief of police – plan to enjoy it with their baby boy. On their list: visiting Santa, decorating the tree, and attending the church Christmas pageant. But when a beloved holiday parade is crashed by white supremacists, Clare and Russ find themselves sucked into a parallel world of militias, machinations and murder.

Meanwhile, single mom and officer Hadley Knox has her hands full juggling her kids and her police work. She doesn’t want to worry about her former partner – and sometimes lover – Kevin Flynn, but when he takes leave from the Syracuse PD and disappears, she can’t help her growing panic that something has gone very wrong.
Novice lawyer Joy Zhào is keeping secrets from her superiors at the state Attorney General’s Office. She knows they wouldn’t condone her off-the-books investigation, but she’s convinced a threatening alt-right conspiracy is brewing – and catching the perpetrators could jump start her career.

NYS Forest Ranger Paul Terrance is looking for his uncle, a veteran of the park service gone inexplicably missing. He doesn’t think much of an ex-cop and out-of-town officer showing up in his patch of the woods, but he’s heard the disturbing rumors of dangerous men in the mountains.

In New York Times Julia Spencer-Fleming's latest novel, as Christmas approaches, these five people will discover their suspicions hang on a single twisting thread, leading to the forbidding High Peaks of the Adirondacks. As the December days shorten and the nights grow long, a disparate group of would-be heroes need to unwind a murderous plot before time runs out.

It has been a long time since a new book was added to this series, and it was nice to visit again with Claire, Russ, and the gang of familiar characters in Miller’s kill. The story revolves around Claire and Russ’s search for a missing friend, whom they believe is somehow mixed up with a rogue militia group. The story is well crafted, fast paced, and held my attention throughout. The tension builds as Claire and Russ race against the clock to try and prevent an attack by the militia. Do they succeed? Read the book and find out.
I recommend this title for fans of Julie Spencer Fleming and anyone who likes a good mystery/thriller. While the story is not overly political, if you are offended by terms such as right wing radicals or hate groups you might want to skip this one.

A solid addition to the series

I like narrator a lot, and interesting, human and ethical characters. The issue of racism and white supremacy was multilayered, not stereotypical.

I waited ((im)patiently for the latest in the Clare & Russ series and was NOT disappointed. Julia Spencer-Fleming remains one of my top favorite thriller authors. Her character and relationship development throughout the series is brilliant, and she writes suspenseful action scenes as well as any world-class author. This latest installment truly has it all: suspense, humor, romance, topical issues, and heart.

This series just keeps getting better!

I happened upon this series of mysteries years ago, and have loved every one of them. It was certainly worth the wait for "At Midnight Comes the Cry". Ms. Spencer-Fleming always presents a complex plot with lots of intersecting aspects to it, and she does it very well. Her central characters, Russ van Alstyne (law enforcement) and Clare Fergusson (Episcopal priest) are such complete people, with fascinating past life experiences that enrich the story. Quite a bit of this story takes place outdoors in the winter in the Adirondacks, and Ms. Spencer-Fleming is quite expert at bringing the winter woods alive, practically like an additional character. The plot takes on a great deal of modern life, with experiences of domestic terrorism, anti-government activities, domestic abuse and prejudice all playing a part in the story. All this is going on during the run-up to the winter holiday season, which only heightens the worry and suspense. It's hard to say too much about the book without giving something away, and I wouldn't want someone seeing my review and having their reading experience spoiled. I had the chance to listen to the audiobook version as well; narrator Suzanne Toren does an incredible job with a large cast with a variety of accents, and really brings the scary feelings upfront when some of the angry interchanges take place. Fans of mysteries with lots of twists and turns and characters to really care about will revel in this outstanding book.

Stunning and intense!

Loved this series about a woman priest and a police Chief. I feel like I know them and wish they lived in my town. It might even convince me to covert the Anglicanism.

A perfect ending for Russ and Clare
